Round nine of the Victorian Netball League was all about pride.

And the league could not have picked two better sides to show it.

Both the Waves and Southern Saints came into the round desperately searching for a win, for the Waves a first of the season, the Saints to arrest a three-match losing streak.

The two sides showed plenty of fighting spirit across the four quarters, but in the end it was the Saints who scored the crucial victory - winning 74-50.

Saints blasted their way to an early lead after an unstoppable 8-1 run in the opening quarter. By the first break, the Saints lead was out to 12, at half-time it was at 16.

But the Waves refused to give up the fight.

There was plenty of good signs for the young Championship side as they still chase that elusive first win of the season.

Saints sharpshooter Emily Andrew continued her remarkable season on goal, with 39 goals and five misses while Annabelle Gorman added 24 of her own in a 40 minute effort.

Andrew took her season total to 311 goals, putting her among the league’s best goalers not far behind Casey’s towering shooter Emma Ryde (371) and Hawks’ Kaylia Stanton (374).

The Waves exacted a measure of revenge in the 19 and Under clash to close ut the night, edging the Saints by three goals in what was a thrilling contest.

PREVIEW: Peninsula determined to start making waves in VNL

They may be cut adrift at the foot of the Victorian Netball League Championship table but Peninsula Waves’ predicament isn’t as bleak as it seems.

There is still plenty of reason for optimism, according to coach Keira Cenin.

The Waves take on Wilson Storage Southern Saints on Wednesday night in their latest bid to kickstart their Championship campaign - and you can catch all the action from the three grades LIVE on KommunityTV from 7pm. See the schedule below.

While the results have not gone their way this season, Cenin was ‘really happy with how we have progressed.’

“We’ve been building across the last eight rounds, we’re a very young team who are just coming together for a long-term plan for us,” she said.

The Waves have yet to secure a win this season, but have managed to push several sides in recent weeks including getting within nine goals of last year’s grand finalists Geelong.

Cenin admitted the Waves 20-goal defeat to the Hawks at the weekend was “a step back”, but had still been encouraged by the style of game her team has brought to the court.

“In the games leading up to that, we have been playing some really good netball,” she said.

“We just haven’t been pulling it together across the four quarters at the moment.”

“We have to stay composed and execute our skills really well.

“When we are on, we are very, very good and opposition teams are going to have to work hard against us, which is very pleasing.”

The Saints also come into the clash chasing a turnaround in form having lost their last three straight including a seven-point defeat to reigning premiers City West Falcons last week.
