PREVIEW
A former Adelaide Thunderbirds player believes the future of SA country netball is as bright as ever as she prepares to coach in this weekend’s Country Championships.
Charlee Hodges, who made her debut for the Thunderbirds in 2018, has been playing for Kybybolite in the Kowree Naracoorte Tatiara Netball Association since stepping back from pro netball and will coach the associations U15s side this weekend.
The championships will feature South Australia’s top country netball regions from the under-11 to senior age groups.
All the action from June 7-9 will be available live and exclusive on KommunityTV with games kicking off from 12pm ACST on Saturday.
“We’re pretty lucky with the league we have and I’m sure other country leagues are the same,” Hodges said.
“I’m so impressed coming into country netball just with the talent and the level of athletes who are all so keen to be involved.
“The championships are going to test what you’re like as a player in every area and it is going to be a great experience for these players and give them a chance to evolve.”
Hodges’ KNTNA side will open its tournament against fellow South East association, Mid South East at 8am on Saturday.
She said her team, led by a number of promising players including Evie Mott and goaler Annie Rasheed, was excited and eager for the experience.
“They’re all eager to learn and you couldn’t ask for anything more.
“Obviously winning is everyone’s goal but we understand the draw is pretty challenging with just three trainings under our belt.
“I just want them to learn as much as they can when it comes to different opponents and different conditions.
“It’s also about making new friendships and developing relationships in the sport.”
All the action will begin from 8am Saturday, with grand finals set to be played at 1.15pm Sunday.
