Queensland showed great resilience under enormous pressure to beat South Australia in the final of the inaugural Netball Australia First Nations tournament in Melbourne.

The Maroons beat third-placed NSW by one goal earlier in the tournament and they again handled the big match atmosphere brilliantly.

South Australia sharpshooter Sienna Wilson converted a perfect 32 from 32 but her team couldn’t quite make up for losing the second quarter 9-6, eventually falling 37-35 in a thriller.

SA started well and led narrowly at the first break. Queensland then stepped up the pressure and grabbed the decisive advantage on the back of some outstanding defensive work.

The second half went 19-18 to SA, but the damage was done.

Earlier, a powerhouse display from NSW saw the sky blues claim third place at the expense of Victoria.

With Charlotte Ryan shooting at 93 per cent and the defensive unit putting on a master class, NSW were always in control of this one.

They burst out of the blocks to lead 13-4 at quartertime. Victoria took the second quarter 11-10, but that was as good as it got for the hosts, with NSW outscoring them 24-14 in a dominant second half.

Meanwhile, promising goal shooter Sophie Brewer hit 31 shots from 36 attempts as Tasmania finished an excellent campaign in fifth place

Brewer, who plays for Cavaliers in the Tasmanian Netball League, scored three of the last four goals as Tassie recovered from a two-goal deficit with three minutes left to beat Western Australia 39-37.

Meanwhile, ACT finished seventh after beating Northern Territory 49-21.

DAY 2 REVIEW

Queensland gained the advantage in the battle for top spot in Pool B at the inaugural Netball Australia First Nations tournament after beating arch rivals NSW in a thriller, 34-33.

After both sides won their opening games on Friday night, this was always likely to be a pivotal game - and it didn’t disappoint.

Charlotte Ryan shot NSW out to a four-goal lead midway through the third quarter after the scores were locked at 17-17 at halftime, only to see Queensland reel them in late on the back of some Lily Cubby brilliance.

The Maroons consolidated that success with a comfortable win over Western Australia later in the day.

South Australia manintained their unbeaten start with, first, a comfortable 16-goal success over Tasmania and then a 32-goal demolition of Northern Territory.

Fresh from a tight win over Victoria on Friday night, South Australia won each quarter of this early morning contest against Tassie, but only kicked clear on the back of an 11-3 final quarter surge to eventually win 40-24.

Sienna Wilson shot 21 goals from 26 attempts while Nasyah Turner scored 19 to add to her opening game 13.

Victoria won both their matches on Saturday, grabbing a 42-24 success over Northern Territory before edging out Tasmania 41-35 in the afternoon.

The Vics scored 11 goals in the opening period against NT and backed it up with 14 in the second to lead 25-10 at the main break.

NT came more into the game in the second half and have a nice platform to build on as the weekend continues.

Jemiah Niki produced her best performance of the tournament so far, landing 23 goals from 25 attempts against Tasmania, including seven in the final quarter of the 41-35 success.

DAY ONE REVIEW

South Australian teenage sharp-shooter Sienna Wilson has set the tone for the inaugural Netball Australia First Nations tournament.

The Garville young gun spearheaded an opening round upset win over tournament hosts Victoria, shooting 19-of-23 at the State Netball Centre in Melbourne.

Willunga young gun Nasyah Turner (13 goals) played a cameo role in a sizzling second half as the South Australia side kickstarted its tournament with a 38-32 win.

Tasmania and Queensland cruised to comfortable opening round wins to start their tournaments off on the right foot.

The girls from the island were impressive with their ball movement across the court and capitalised on several crucial Northern Territory errors as they ran away with a 17-2 final quarter to register a 57-16 win.

Queensland’s Jayden Molo played a brilliant hand in her side’s 16-goal win over the ACT with the young gun’s ball movement causing chaos for the defenders.

In the final match of the opening night, NSW withstood a valiant fight from rivals Western Australia but a brilliant third quarter performance proved the difference.

Charlotte Ryan finished with 27 goals from 31 attempts as the sky blues held on for a 43-35 win.

It will have a nationwide feel as well with Victoria, ACT, Tasmania, New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory all competing to be crowned the best in the country.

“It will provide the opportunity for Netball Australia and its Member Organisations to develop what an ongoing First Nations tournament can grow to become as our sport moves forward on its collective First Nations journey.”

The tournament follows on from the introduction of the inaugural First Nations Black Swans team this year, who competed at the recent Australian Netball Championships in Canberra.

First Nations coaches, umpires and officials from around the country will also take part in the inaugural event as Netball Australia shows off the depth of Indigenous talent across the netballing nation.

The live stream coverage of the First Nations Tournament culminates a big first year of a live streaming partnership between Netball Australia and KommunityTV which has included exclusive coverage of the National Netball Championships and Marie Little Shield.
