The Hawks have reignited their Victorian Netball League Championship campaign at the perfect time with a confidence boosting 64-38 win over Ariels.

The Hawks speed in transition was crucial as they pulled clear of a young Ariels outfit in the second half.

Any mistake was quickly punished as the Hawks fizzed passes through their centre court, with starting centre Abigail Inglis and wing attack Lorna Clark sparking the offence to life.

Former Melbourne Vixen Kaylia Stanton was unstoppable under the hoop for the Hawks, scoring 45 goals at a touch over 82 per cent.

The Ariels refused to go away throughout the clash with the exciting Amelia Brock keeping them in the contest with 21 goals.

The win comes at a crucial time for the Hawks as the side aims to stay within striking distance of the top end of town heading into the middle stretch of the season. The win improves the Hawks record to 3-4 to start the Victorian Netball League season.

The Hawks capped off a perfect Round 7 for the club as a whole with their Division 1 side winning 63-35 while the 19 and Under side closed out the night with a 57-41 win.

AJ Ballantyne has taken his Hawks Netball side ‘back to basics’ this week in the hope of reviving their season with a win over Ariels on Wednesday night.

The clash is shaping up as a pivotal one, with both sides on the brink of falling out of touch with the finals race.

With the young Ariels side already exceeding expectations by winning two games, Ballantyne admits to being wary.

“We’re definitely not taking any team lightly at the moment, we have had two wins and we need another on the board,” he said.

“We need to come out and perform to turn around a couple of weeks where we felt like we were in both games.

“Against Saints we had a poor couple of patches that really cost us, and then against Boroondara, we let ourselves down with our execution across the whole game.

The Hawks will be looking to find some form on Wednesday night.

“We have gone back to basics, doing the simple things really well, because it’s what we did in the pre-season and it worked for us in the first part of the season.”

Ballantyne said the 2-4 Hawks are still ‘learning’ the depths of Championship netball and have studied their upcoming opposition thoroughly.

“We’ve got a young team and we’re learning that you can’t have a bad five minutes in Championship,” he said.

“Last week we were 5-5 in the first five minutes, a few errors and all of a sudden we’re down 5-12.

“It’s so hard to pull that back, so we’re just learning to be consistent and work through those moments without the score getting away from you.

“They’ve (Ariels) got a pretty strong attacking end, Amelia Brock, under the post, and then players like Ash Gill in the mid court who is super experienced.

“It’s been one of our biggest focuses of the back of the last two weeks: how can we slow teams down off their centre pass.

“So, I think putting the time into those players will hold us in good stead for this Wednesday and hopefully get us a win on the board.”
