Boroondara has set up a mouthwatering top of the table clash with City West Falcons next week after powering past the Waves on Wednesday.

The Waves were willing, and brought the fight to the Express at different times, but in the end they couldn’t match it with the might of the Victorian Netball League table toppers.

Boroondara lived up to their name, flying out of the blocks with five unanswered goals to start the Championship clash and from their they never looked back.

The Express led by 14 at the main break, but it was in the third quarter where they did the most damage rattling off 15 goals to the Waves 10.

The Waves refused to die wondering, and managed to win the final quarter of the contest 15-10 in what is a good sign for the building club.

The Championship win capped off a strong night for the Express which included a thrilling 60-59 win in the 19-and-Under clash.

The Waves got one back in the Division 1 contest, running out 65-56 winners.

Preview: Express have one eye on VNL finals series

When asked about their season prospects, most coaches, across every sport, will trot out the tired cliche of taking things one week at a time.

Not Boroondara Express coach Kathleen Knott.

The high-flying Express have turned their fortunes around in 2023, sitting equal-first on the Victorian Netball League ladder having already surpassed their total wins for last year (7) at the halfway point of this season.

While Knott was clear on the importance of respecting each side, including their opposition on Wednesday night the winless Peninsula Waves, she was adamant they haven’t lost sight of their end of season goal either.

The Express clash against the Waves will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV as part of a VNL match-of-the-round triple header.

With the winless Waves this week and a top of the table clash against City West Falcons next week, Knott said her side was embracing the next fortnight as a true test of their finals credentials.

“I feel as a coach you always start the season with a year’s plan and where you want to be at the end of the year,” she said.

“It’s also about where you want to be in three years, where you want to be in five years and your goal at the end of the year is to win a premiership.

“As a team you talk about how we are going to get there and yes it’s a week at a time, but when you’re doing your fitness, your strength and conditioning it’s for that view at the end of the year.”

At the beginning of the year, Knott joked about how her minimum expectation for her side was to be the undefeated premiers.

With only one loss after nine rounds, premiership glory is firmly on her radar, but she was quick to provide an update on how her side has tackled the ambitious early season pass mark.

“I guess we aren’t undefeated,” she quipped.

“My expectations of the girls and the expectations of each other is to be there at the end of the year.

“I think last week was the first week we really showed consistency through 60 minutes of netball, which is something I want to keep building through the next few weeks – we have a game plan, we need to stick to it for 60 minutes.”

Knott said Express will need to play a physical brand of netball to defeat a Waves side who has been banging on the door of victory in recent weeks.

“I think Waves play a traditionally hard defence, they play very on the body, they contest, they’re physical,” she said.

After the nasty ankle injury to Olivia Morris, Tiana Farrell and Ruby Barkmeyer have been crucial for Express and will need to continue that form if Boroondara is to meet its bold expectations.
