The Grange is set to be boosted by the return of one of its best players ahead of a Storm Cup grand final rematch against Hallam.
Explosive centre Matt Kereti will play his first game of the season for The Grange as the side looks to gain some redemption after losing to Hallam in the decider last year.
And his timely return could see a set of brothers line up together for the Hoppers Crossing school.
Both The Grange and Hallam started the season in perfect fashion beating Mount Ridley and Victoria University respectively in round one last week.
Watch the grand final rematch live and exclusive on KommunityTV on Thursday from 12.30pm.
It will be the second match of a Storm Cup double-header, with Manor Lakes and Victoria University kicking off the action at 11am.
Kereti, who was The Grange’s best in the grand final with two tries, has been out of action for the past few months after suffering a serious head injury during pre-season for the Melbourne Storm in its SG Ball preparations.
Thursday’s match will be his first hitout since November last year.
“It will be limited minutes but positive for us to have him back,” The Grange coach Shannon Love said.
“It gives the boys hope and motivation.
“I’m excited to see him play.”
Matt could be joined by his brother Alphonso who made his debut in the halves against Mount Ridley in the 44-18 demolition in round one.
Love said a decision wouldn’t be made until close to game time but there’s excitement if it happened.
“It will be pretty special for them and their family,” he said.
“I know they are keen for that as well.”
Hallam hasn’t lost a match since the 2023 Storm Cup grand final against Victoria University – and The Grange has not beaten the competition frontrunners since the first round that season.
Love said the desire to defeat Hallam had been burning throughout the off-season.
“At the start of the year we spoke about losing that grand final as a motivation factor for us,” he said.
“We’ve got a lot of boys this year in year 12 and it’s their last crack at the NRL Schoolboys Cup.
“They all bought in together.
“They had a bit of a discussion of do we want to take the competition to the next level.
“The boys in term one were training hard and ripping in (to do it).”
Love is wary of a strong Hallam team full of talent.
Hallam could have explosive fullback Waka Hammond back after he missed the opening round.
But The Grange coach is more concerned by another area of Hallam’s attack.
“Their forward pack is the classiest forward pack in Melbourne,” Love said.
“We’ve got to match it with them.
“If we don’t match it with them, especially early in the game, then they are just going to gain the momentum and roll on.
“They are a talented side who are hard to stop.
“Our edges will be able to match there’s.
“It’s just whether we can hold their middle pack.”
The earlier Storm Cup clash on Thursday sees Victoria University looking to bounce back after their loss against Hallam.
It will be Manor Lakes’ first game of the season after having the bye in round one.
