St Patrick’s College’s classy five-eighth Adam McSherry dismantled Ignatius Park College with a 14-point individual performance to guide his school to 22-8 victory.

McSherry continued to impress in the No.6 jersey after moving from fullback with a remarkable individual try complementing a perfect five goals from five attempts with the tee.

Discipline cost the home side and Ignatius Park fullback Lincoln Baker was sensationally sent off with five minutes to play after back-chatting the touch judge who called a forward pass that put a stop to the school’s late attempt at a comeback.

Iggy Park had trailed 20-0 midway through the second half when a second wind allowed them to score back-to-back tries and it looked like they would score a third on the trot until the final pass was thrown forward.

With the triumph in Townsville, St Patrick’s leapfrogged Iggy Park into second place in Pool A following the final regular round of the Aaron Payne Cup.

Although the win will be a great confidence boost for St Patrick’s College, it had minimal impact on next week’s finals series with these two schools set to lock horns again.

It didn’t take long for McSherry to stamp his authority on the match.

An early linebreak put his school deep in attack before a beautiful short pass by halfback Kooper Shears put Mark Morrow over to score.

A moster McSherry 40/20 kick laid the perfect platform to attack and powerful lock Caleb O’Brien was able to steamroll Kyhnaan Kennedy close to the line to score.

A penalty goal in the late stages of the first half extended his school’s lead to three scores and the livewire five-eighth scored with a weaving run as the siren sounded to give his side a 20-point advantage at the break.

McSherry had to shrug off a brutal crusher tackles less than a minute after halftime, but he played on without showing any negative signs.

Baker got his side into the game midway through the second stanza with a fantastic grubber to himself close to the line.

An error from the ensuing kick-off invited trouble back into St Patrick’s half and a looping cut-out pass to right winger Bruce Baudu doubled Ignatius Park’s lead minutes after their first score.

Ignatius Park thought they had a third consecutive try but it was called back for a forward pass and as the teams were racing back for the 20m restart, Baker was sent off for the words he had with the touchline official, all-but ending any hopes of an unlikely win.

IGNATIUS PARK: 8 (Lincoln Baker, Bruce Baudu tries)

ST PATRICK’S: 22 (Mark Morrow, Caleb O’Brien, Adam McSherry tries; Adam McSherry (5) goals)

COWBOYS CHALLENGE REVIEW

Barnstorming Cowboys-contracted backrower Sangwani Chinula inspired a thrilling 18-12 victory for St Patrick’s College in the year 10 Cowboys Challenge on Wednesday morning.

Chinula’s powerful carries and momentum-halting tackles helped his side come back from a slow start to finish their regular season with a bang.

St Patrick’s halfback Grange Womal controlled the game expertly as he pulled the strings in attack, and a flawless kicking display ensured the Mackay boys took maximum points with every try.

Ignatius Park’s year 9 halfback Tim Dixon got the hosts off to a quick start with a well-weighted kick to allow Beau Bawden to stroll over.

Chinula hit back late in the half to level the scores when he caught the ball and accelerated from a standing start to barge through the defence and slam the ball down over the line.

The unstoppable St Pat’s backrower got in on the action again just after halftime when he attracted two defenders and put his outside man, Bailey Smith, into space for a runaway try.

Iggy Park fullback Milton Larry was a constant threat in attack and a linebreak on the final play gave his chance the faintest hope of a miracle comeback, but it was not to be.

IGNATIUS PARK: 12 (Beau Bawden, Byron Piggott tries; Milton Larry (2) goals)

ST PATRICK’S: 18 (Sangwani Chinula, Marik Srsen, Bailey Smith tries; Grange Womal (3) goals)

St Patrick’s coach Ian Schifilliti said he was expecting a physical contest against the 2024 Confraternity Carnival champions.

“It’s like they’ve grown an extra foot since Confraternity,” Schifilliti said.

“But we’ve just been worrying about our own thing, we’ve slowly turned a corner with our own performances and it’s a quick turnaround so we’re looking forward for another tight game come Wednesday.

Ignatius Park has the better recent form between the two sides, winning both games the schools have played this year – once in round 3 of the Payne Cup and again in the finals of Confro.

St Pats’ Adam McSherry will have a key part to play with his boot.
St Pats’ Adam McSherry will have a key part to play with his boot.

But St Pat’s 46-6 demolition of Trinity Bay last week has Schifilliti excited about his side’s chances, especially after in-form playmaker Adam McSherry scored four tries and kicked seven of eight goals for a 30-point individual haul.

The St Patrick’s coach said McSherry’s goalkicking could well prove the difference against Ignatius Park.

“I was lucky enough to coach him in Cowboys Challenge, so you kind of lock him in for our kicking,” Schifilliti said.

“But that being said, Hunter Harris kicked the winner against Iggy last year, too, so this year even our second choice is not too bad either.

“Especially with for-and-against, and in a tight affair, goalkicking can literally be the difference.”
