Wests Tigers young gun Lorima Cosgrave has inspired St Gregory’s College to a season-defining win in the Peter Mulholland Cup.
The proud league nursery defied torrid conditions on the Central Coast to maintain its unbeaten start to the Peter Mulholland Cup.
The hard-running lock forward set up two barnstorming tries as St Greg’s held on for a 18-10 win in the wet.

While he has the size and physicality to stand toe-to-toe with most middle forwards in the Peter Mulholland Cup, it was Cosgrave’s finer skills on show which will have the Tigers NRL fans excited for the future.
Cosgrave, who signed a three-year deal with the Tigers last season, spent most of the SG Ball Cup campaign at dummy-half, and it was that versatility that proved key on Wednesday.
Cosgrave set up bulldozing props Deklin Jarrett and Jake Gaffney for four pointers, while his presence around the ruck was enough to worry defenders and allowed back-up dummy-half Cooper Meares to dive across the stripe.
Central Coast, buoyed by a spirited turn out from the school’s cohort, managed to fight their way back into the contest levelling the scores on the stroke of halftime.
Impressive halfback Carter Mareko made a half break to get the home side on the front foot before he backed up in the next play linking with Isaac Fotu-Moala to set up speedy winger Tate Bailey in the corner.
A late consolation try to Central Coast winger Corbin Devaney - who was locked in a ding dong battle with rival Aidan Richards for most of the game - cut the deficit to eight points.
NRL Schoolgirls Cup
Dynamic dummy-half Olivia Saley and inspirational captain Ellie Brander have spearheaded a dominant round two win for Central Coast Sports College.
The Central Coast side sent a clear warning to the rest of the NRL Schoolgirls Cup contenders with an unrelenting 60-0 win over Matraville Sports High.
Brander, who captained the Central Coast Roosters Lisa Faiola Cup side this season, was instrumental early on scoring two barge over tries and setting up two others with blockbuster runs.
But it was the crafty Saley, who had her fingerprints all over the win.
The touch football representative showed her pace and footwork out of the ruck, getting Central Coast on the front foot before feeding her support cast.
Saley celebrated her performance with an individual try late in the second half when she fooled the Matraville defence with a pin-point grubber for herself to score under the sticks.
Central Coast halfback and Sydney Roosters NRLW development player, Sienna Thomas, showed her skill with ball in hand, causing plenty of headaches for the Matraville defence.
Thomas set up several tries in the first half and scored a runaway effort of her own after pulling out two big goose-steps on her way to the tryline.
PREVIEW
There’s nothing like an early Peter Mulholland Cup blockbuster to whet the appetite.
Top spot in Pool D is on the line when Central Coast Sports College welcomes St Gregory’s College to town in round two action on Wednesday.
That clash plus the Central Coast and Matraville Sports High NSW Schoolgirl Cup match will be live and exclusive here on KommunityTV.
Both were opening round winners, with St Greg’s impressive in holding Westfields to just eight points in a clinical showing.
CCSC did it tougher before eventually getting over the top of Hills Sports 28-18, and coach Paul Franze believes they have plenty to improve upon.
“I’m happy with the fact we underperformed and still went well,” he said.
“I feel we could be a lot better. Continuity has a lot to do with that. We underperformed but still came away with the win.”
By the time they run out against St Greg’s that victory would be four weeks in the rear-view mirror, giving them plenty of time to prepare.
“We’re feeling positive coming into this one. We’ve had a few opportunities to iron out some kinks that were presented in the last game,” Franze said.
“I feel like we’re building in confidence. Obviously we’d rather be playing week-to-week, but the break does give us some time to get back, review video and make whatever adjustments we need.
“Building those combinations is important. When you get into these tournaments you have boys playing rep footy all over the place. It’s about bringing them all together.”
Aware of the importance of victory, Franze said the men in the middle could prove to be the key to victory.
“I’d be lying if I said the boys weren’t chomping at the bit to rip in together,” he said.
“Dayne Jennings is someone to watch out for. He’s really got the ability to light things up when he’s given the ball in space.
“We have some really exciting middle forwards too. Khyanu Mahon is a workhorse, and Samuel Tracey and Blessing Foini really give that support to their starting front rowers.
“I’ve had the privilege of coaching Blessing at the Roosters and I know what he’s capable of. Sam is ultra-consistent.
“Sionelote Talakai hasn’t had a shot in the Schoolboy Cup yet, but he’s really turning into an impact middle forward, so we have some good options there.”
Watch every moment as NSW schoolgirl action kicks off the day at 12pm before the round two clash between Central Coast and St Greg’s live on KommunityTV from 1.30pm Wednesday.
