Ivanhoe Knights are welcoming the challenge of taking on what coach Josh Parker says is competition’s “benchmark side”.

In what is set to be another huge Far North Queensland Rugby League match of the round fixture, Southern Suburbs will play host to Ivanhoes at Alley Park on Sunday.

And the match will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.

Suburbs have experienced a dramatic turnaround after ending the 2024 campaign with just one win, they are now undefeated through six rounds this season.

Parker said while taking on the ladder leaders was set to be a challenge for his 3-3 side to overcome, they had begun to find their feet after a mixed start to the season.

“As I’ve said before, we lost a lot of personnel from last year’s side, so we were still getting some of the boys used to the week-to-week grind that is A-grade footy,” Parker said.

“I think we’ve started to drill into them that in order to win games at this level, you have to play the full 80 minutes, not just 60 or 70.”

Parker said last round’s that the 16-4 victory over Tully Tigers was one of their best wins of the season, as the Knights played without a bench for the majority of the fixture and were down to 12 men for most of the second half.

“To come in and win a game like that in atrocious conditions was very pleasing for our guys,” he said.

“We’ve shown we can win games by scoring a lot of points, and now we’ve shown we can win games with our defensive efforts.

“We just have to keep focusing on ourselves and what we can bring to the table.”

Ivanhoes and Suburbs will clash in the A-Grade from 3pm.

Earlier in the day, it will be two of the FNQRL’s best women’s teams going to battle, as the Knights play host to Yarrabah at 10.30am.

The Seahawks’ Lisa Waireg, who was a dominant feature in Northern Pride’s under-19s rep side, will be hoping to continue her try-scoring ways as she is currently equal-first in the competition with nine.

Meanwhile, with just one loss to their name this season, expect Ivanhoes to put up a strong challenge.

Following the women it will be Suburbs against Ivanhoes in the under-19s at midday and the reserves at 1.30pm.
