Excitement machine Noah Wright racked up 16 individual points for St Brendan’s as the Yeppoon powerhouse got its Dolphins Cup title defence off to a winning start.

The wily winger scored two tries and landed four conversions in the 24-12 win against Shalom College.

Despite a strong start, the reigning champs had a battle on their hands against the gallant Bundaberg outfit.

St Brendan’s were off to a flying start, with tries to Wright and halfback Lachlan Anderson putting them out to a 12-point lead but a four-pointer from centre Kyan Edwards kept Shalom in touch until the break.

An energised Shalom narrowed the gap to just two points when their hard-working second rower Aston Fraser crashed over just minutes after play resumed.

But as quickly as they were back in the hunt at 12-10, Brendan’s responded as Wright crossed for his second three minutes later.

Despite their best efforts, Shalom could not add to the scoreboard and it was St Brendan’s who had the last say, with Cayden Hoare crossing in the 53rd minute to complete the scoreline.

In Schoolgirls Cup action, it was Charlie Gear who announced her arrival with a scintillating performance for Shalom College in the competition opener on Tuesday.

The touch convert looked right at home in the number one jersey, scoring two tries in her team’s commanding 32-nil win over North Rockhampton State High.

The team’s dynamic halfback, Courtney Driver, also got in on the action, scoring the first and last of their seven unanswered tries.

There were ominous signs for North Rocky as Driver scored just three minutes into the contest.

Three more first-half tries had them well placed at 18-nil at the break.

Shalom continued on where they left off in the second stanza, scoring three more tries to start their 2025 campaign in brilliant fashion.

And in the Challenge clash, it was Shalom College that held on to take the points with a hard-fought win in its opening game.

Playing on their home turf, the Bundaberg boys got off to a strong start against St Brendan’s and took a 10-4 lead into the half-time break.

The visitors managed to close the gap to just two points midway through the second stanza but the hard-working Shalom outfit held firm to finish the game with a 10-8 victory.

When it comes to the Dolphins Cup clash, it will be two dynamic ball-runners who hold all the cards.

Shalom coach Antonio Kaufusi knows if exciting fullback Parkka Perrotta-Dowling is firing early on, it will set the tone for his team.

Equally, St Brendan’s will look to their exciting custodian Kobe Oberhardt to create plenty of attacking opportunities.

This is the first time Shalom has played its opening game at home, something Kaufusi hopes will work in their favour.

“We’re pretty excited about that but we know the quality they have at St Brendan’s and that we’re up for a massive challenge,” he said.

“We’ve been working pretty hard and for me, it’s not so much about the result but rather how we go about things.

“I’ll be looking for the boys to put into practice what we’ve been focusing on – keeping it simple, our effort areas and competing for longer periods.

“If we can do those things and build on them, I’ll be pretty happy.”

St Brendan’s coach Scott Minto is seeing improvement week on week in his playing group but knows there can be no complacency.

“Shalom have been building over the past couple of years under Antonio Kaufusi and are now the powerhouse of Bundaberg rugby league,” he said.

“We are under no illusion that they will be one of the teams to beat this year.

“Our focus will be drumming the important on-field principals into our boys, particularly the younger players coming into the Firsts in these opening rounds, in a bid to create some consistency in our game model.”

Both coaches believe they have greater balance and depth in all positions this season.

Kaufusi wants his hardworking outfit playing finals, and said to not set that goal would be doing his team a disservice.

“I want to make sure the boys believe in that and we want to make sure we show that in our performances,” he said.

St Brendan’s is eyeing a third Cup title and Minto is confident he has the personnel to do it.

“If they can get to the level I think they’re capable of, they’re going to be a really good side.”
