WHAT WE LEARNED

SAM IS A LARGE STAR

Thursday’s first semi-final began as a major arm wrestle throughout the first half, with both New South Wales CCC and Queensland Maroon able to gather enough momentum to take advantage on the scoreboard.

Despite the 6-6 score line at half-time, it was an entertaining struggle that somewhat lacked a major highlight.

Enter NSW’s five-eighth Sam Large.

The exciting playmaker produced a moment of individual brilliance early in the second-half, slicing through Queensland’s defence for a blistering run to the try line.

It was a moment that eventually proved to swing the contest in New South Wales favour, with Nate Miller’s own try-making run just minutes later equally as impressive.

The victory ensured CCC a spot in Friday’s grand final and while they’ll need to be at their best to knock off an impressive Queensland Maroon side, Sam Large is one man that is built for the biggest of moments.

BRAVE ACT LOSE NO FANS IN SEMI-FINAL DEFEAT

While I’m sure the ACT wouldn’t be happy with a brave semi-final defeat, the boys from the nation’s capital lost absolutely no fans against a classy Queensland Maroon outfit in Thursday’s second semi-final.

Despite heading in as overriding underdogs, the ACT produced a spirited second-half fightback that ultimately fell eight points short of a victory.

The Maroons won 30-22.

A big tackle from prop Adam Dzaja showed the ACT held no fears but despite their early momentum, it was Lenton Steven Funaki that provided another early highlight to score the first try of the game for Queensland.

It took just two minutes for the ACT to respond, with Benji McNamara collecting a wonky pass under pressure before finding the try line for their first of the day.

The back and forth action continued when Queensland scored their second through Cruz Molo, making the ACT pay off a turnover, with consecutive tries from Jaxon Worthing and Digby Ioane in as many minutes finally giving the Maroons some breathing room with a 20-6 lead.

Ioane provided another highlight minutes later to further extend that lead with the Maroons well in control at half-time, up 26-6.

They scored a fifth straight try early after the break, and while it could have been easy for the ACT to throw in the towel, this is where they turned the contest around.

Scoring the final three tries of the game, including two to Mason Morrissey, ensured they didn’t go down without a fight and were able to put some respect back on the scoreboard come the final whistle.
