NSW Combined Independent Schools have declared they can still take the fight to the big states despite missing four of their biggest stars for the ASSRL U18 Nationals.
Manly-contracted brothers Ashton and Onitoni Large have been ruled out of the tournament through injury, while boom Tigers rookie Heamasi Makasini and Roosters-contracted fullback Rex Bassingthwaighte have been put on ice by their respective clubs.
While they enter the tournament in Coffs Harbour understrength, it has not dented the belief in the NSW CIS ranks according to coach Yoni Charlupsky.
Every match of the ASSRL Nationals will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from July 14-20.
The coaching staff have called up dual-code rising star and Bulldogs-contracted fullback Jai Callaghan to replace Bassingthwaite, while Newington College speedster Braith Sloane comes into the starting side in place of Makasini.
The NSW CIS have plenty of playmaking ability in their halves including reigning Harold Matthews Cup player of the year Carter Mareko (Central Coast Sports College) and Cronulla Sharks young gun Callum Grantham.
Exciting Central Coast Sports College outside back Dayne Jennings, who has become one of the brightest prospects coming through the ranks at South Sydney will be a key weapon out wide.
“I am confident with the boys we have got, they know what is at stake and they know what we are trying to achieve,” Charlupsky said.
“We still have all the makings of a CIS side going for their first ever Under-18s national title.”
Charlupsky has a history of success at the helm of NSW CIS, coaching the state to back-to-back Under-15s titles at the ASSRL National Championships in 2022-23.
Five players remain in the squad from those title wins including brothers Tanner and Khyanu Mahon, five-eighth Callum Grantham, Paula Teisina and Keone Anitelea-Tsioussis.
Strike backrower James Finegan, who scored a double for the Roosters in their SG Ball Cup final, will line up in the back row alongside Sydney teammate Eddy Cayless.
“We have got strength from one to 20,” Charlupsky said.
“We have been a bit unlucky with the talent we have lost, but I am just excited for the opportunity these boys.
“I am proud of them, where they have come from and what they represent.
“I want them to just believe in themselves and believe in the processes we have in place. Back themselves and back their footy, but most importantly back each other.
“Being connected is what we have prided ourselves on.”
