The city slickers got an early taste of bush resilience as the National Futsal Championships kicked off in Melbourne. Watch all the PITCH 7 action in the replays.

A packed out pitch 7 crowd gathered to see the NSW U16 futsal derby, with victory going the way of the Country boys in an enthralling contest.

The pace of NSW Country’s Sebastian Hayward was unstoppable as he put through the first goal of the game in the fourth minute to give his side the 1-0 lead at halftime.

Nima Jafari then followed with a nice finish before youngster Kade Lyons sealed the win.

Jacob Sullivan scored a late goal for NSW Metro when numbers were thrown forward to give them the extra player.

NSW Country coach Nicholas Verdos said he was pleased to beat Metro who historically set the benchmark in the competition.

Sebastian Hayward and Nima Jafari were the first two goalscorers.

“Very happy (with the result),” Verdos said.

“It’s a team that’s been put together only a couple of weeks ago.

“To play our fellow NSW team, and get a win, is a very good feeling.”

Verdos was pleased with some of his younger players, including 15-year-old Lyons who scored a thumping goal.

“Young Kade Lyons, he was immense,” he said.

“And probably our keeper, Blake Cordell, (impressed me), he kept us in the game early on when it was still very close.”

Asked about the eye-catching sheer pace and dribbling skills of Hayward, Verdos was complimentary of his performance.

“Every game Seb is just the same,” he said.

“That’s what I expect, that’s just what he does every single game, he doesn’t stop running and doesn’t stop fighting.

“He is a nine out of ten or ten out of ten nearly every game and he did it again today.”

Following the opening game of the tournament, Verdos had hopes of a finals appearance and top four finish.

They next take on Queensland U16 on Monday afternoon who had a strong 8-0 win over Victoria.
