South Australia will head into tomorrow’s quarter-finals riding a high of confidence after securing two clutch wins on Thursday.
In what was arguably the game of the Basketball Australia Under-20 & Ivor Burge National Championships so far, SA produced a thrilling upset win over Queensland to kick off proceedings on the Show Court.
The 100-99 victory was a tantalising matchup throughout before the final two minutes well and truly took things up a notch.
SA’s titan in the middle Deng Manyang was the hero, scoring nine straight points for the Croweaters in the last 2.46 of the game to reverse a six-point deficit, before big plays from role players Oscar Sabine and Jackson Bowden gave them a one-point lead with 4.2 seconds left.
There was still a job to do though, with the looming figure of reigning U20 Nationals MVP Roman Siulepa ready to rip the game away at the buzzer.
But Manyang stepped up again to ensure Siulepa’s shot went unfulfilled, ensuring the 100-99 win.
SA also claimed victory in the final match of the day over on Court 6 against NSW Blue.
In other Show Court results, Tasmanian Nash Walker was lights out from beyond the arc as he led Tasmania to a xx-xx defeat of NSW.
Walker shot x from three-point range as he notched x for the game.
Earlier, the Victoria Ivor Burge men has a huge win by over Tasmania, with the 140-74 victory coming off the back of two stellar offensive showings.
Jake De La Motte finished with a monster 38 points and an 8-8 from the free throw line while teammate Jack Innella finished with 31 points, eight rebounds and seven steals.
A remarkable first-half on defence then ensured the New South Wales Ivor Burge women’s side would easily account for Queensland.
The 109-37 result was built off the back of an astonishing 60-8 first-half score line.
In U20 women’s action Victoria was too good for Tasmania while SA overcame some nervy moments to take care of WA.
