They had been the dominant force all week yet, amazingly, Casey Cavaliers had something left in the tank for the Basketball Australia U14 Club Championship final.
And poor, old Norths Bears were on the receiving end, eventually succumbing to a 88-44 defeat that at one stage threatened to be much, much worse.
With a vocal crowd roaring them on, the Cavaliers burst out of the blocks, leading 18-7 at quarter time and extending it to 41-21 at the main break.
The result was put beyond doubt in the first four minutes of the third quarter when the Cavaliers went on a 16-0 run. Indeed, Norths were 22-6 in that pivotal term.
The final quarter was all about enjoyment and admiring the talents of the home side who have gone through the Victorian and now National tournaments with an unbeaten record.
Earlier, after falling agonisingly short last year, there was no denying Kilsyth Cobras girls the national title this time around.
Beaten by Illawarra Hawks in a thriller in 2023, the Cobras saw off the challenge of host club Casey Cavaliers, eventually taking the match 49-45.
The Cobras weren’t headed after a late second quarter run of 10 points broken open a tight match. Casey rallied late but Kilsyth held firm defensively under fierce pressure.
For players like Jada Hill, who averaged nearly 20 points per game, and Tia Crossland, it was a welcome change of fortune after the disappointment of 2023.
The Cobras won all eight games in a dominant week by an average of 26 points, never conceding more than 45 points in a game and finding scorers all over the court.
The Cavaliers closed fast late, but had conceded too much of an early advantage. Still, they can be satisfied with their week’s work, losing only to Bendigo Braves prior to the final.
