“I think it’s proof of our development program,” he said.

“We start at Tiny Tigers at age five and six and take them through to rep basketball.

“I think the proof in the pudding is that we get them to play in the highest age group of interstate basketball.

“It’s proof we’re doing pretty well but it’s also a good reward for the players who commit to many years of development to get to that stage.”

Brooking further praised the accomplishments of the six set to play in the tournament while encouraging them to continue to work towards the steeper challenge ahead.

“These kids have done far more than turn up to a game or a training session,” he said.

“They do extra sessions, they do early morning sessions, they’re involved in state development programs, the workload is massive, they work early in the morning until late at night.

“I am very proud of them because it is a reward for hard work and the other thing is where they go from here.

“Hopefully their journey isn’t over; we play in NBL1, we have got players who go to WNBL,

NBL and we have had Josh Giddey, who is a product of our program playing for OKC (NBA).

“Obviously it is a steep period, but we tell all our athletes that there is a pathway and if you work hard, you can get there.

“Having the juniors making the state team, and Victoria is still the basketball state, it’s very exciting.”
