The champions have been decided after an exciting final day of the U14 Australian Basketball Club Championships at Hills Basketball Courts in Sydney.

And - to no-one’s surprise - Victorian powerhouse Nunawading took home the boys/girls double.

Read on for the grand final match reports and replays.

Fast start powers Nunawading to big boys win

Nunawading have run out 88-54 winners against Rockhampton to finish the week as national boys champions.

Nunawading raced out of the blocks and simply couldn’t be caught, with familiar names Charlie Wilson and Tom Dammers doing some of the early damage.

Despite Rockhampton working back into the game with a strong second quarter, the Spectres kicked it up a gear after the break and won comfortably.

Nunawading coach Rick Vos said he was proud of his group.

The Spectres didn’t lose a game under his tenure in the last year.

“I’m so excited for these boys, they’ve worked really hard for 12 months to get to this point,” Vos said.

“This is just the start of their basketball careers and that’s one of the most exciting things.

“There’s 12 players there who are going to have long careers.

“We’re really proud of our club. We received tremendous support across the whole campaign.”

Nunawading’s brilliant start was something it had targeted in its pre-match planning.

The early margin was built on defensive pressure.

“We really focused on the first three minutes of the game,” Vos said.

“We wanted to get out to a strong lead and it was important we held that.

“We were able to rotate guys through and still build on it which was really important.

“They did challenge us but we knew what would happen. I was happy with how the boys responded to that.”

Depth key behind Spectres win in girls decider

Nunawading Spectres have been crowned U14 girls club champions after a 56-37 grand final victory over Mackay Meteorettes put the seal on an excellent week.

The Spectres only led 25-17 at halftime lead before taking total control in the second half.

The Queensland v Victoria girls battle had been brewing since the semifinals, which featured two teams from each state.

It has now been settled.

The Meteorettes, who knocked out the Melbourne Tigers in the semifinals, found the Spectres a different class and were never really in the hunt.

The impressive accuracy of Nunwading’s shots was all too much.

Coach Jaysn Harvey sung the praises of his players for their development throughout the week.

He said it was simply taking it day by day.

“It’s been a long 12 months, we set ourselves up at the start of that period with the goals of getting to this point,” Harvey said.

“The girls have worked hard to make sure they’ve done everything right during the week to have that happen.”

Harvey praised his team’s depth with everyone able to contribute when they stepped onto the court.

“That’s one of the big things we’ve worked on, that everyone needs to play their role,” he said.

“One goes down we need the next step up and play exactly the same.

“That’s probably our strength over some of the other teams, we can just go which allows us to play up pressure defensively the whole time.”

The gold medal capped a brilliant year of basketball for the Spectres.

They didn’t lose a game - at any tournament or competition.

“It’s been pretty incredible,” Harvey said.

“The former director of coaching Tammy Harvey built this team two or three years ago when these girls were nine and 10.

“This has been a long process and the aim back then was to get them to win this championship.”
