It was billed as a heavyweight battle. Goliath v Goliath.
And it lived up to the hype.
Victoria have stamped their credentials as defending champions, knocking off the team that seems their biggest challenge to the gold in NSW on Wednesday night.
The two sides traded baskets and bruises throughout an engrossing encounter, but in the end it was the southern state that managed to hold out their rivals in a 72-67 thriller on the Show Court.
The loss of NSW superstar Isla Juffermans, fouled out of the game with the scores level and a minute left on the clock, proved pivotal as the sky blues lacked the firepower when they needed it most.
Juffermans was kept oddly quiet by a staunch Victorian defensive performance, while on the offensive end it was WNBL contracted duo Dyana Ananiev (28 points) and Sophie Burrows (23) who did the damage.
It was a classic way to finish a day in which the Victorians reigned on the Show Court.
Earlier Victoria fired the first major warning shot of the Ivor Burge men’s tournament after downing reigning champions South Australia.
In what was a physical, and at times rather fiery, encounter between the two top sides in the tournament, Victoria ended up running away with the contest 115-65.
South Australian captain Zac Georg-Dent (36 pts), who had dominated the opening day of the national championships, was heavily targeted by the Victorians, copping a whopping 18 fouls and 25 looks from the free throw line.
But in the end it was the South Australian side who finished in foul trouble, with six of their players fouled out of the contest, finishing with only three on the court.
Jake de la Motte led the way for the Victorian side on the offensive end, scoring 25 points in 21 minutes of action before he too was fouled out of the contest.
The action continues on the show court as the Victorian Navy men, fresh off a 1-1 start to the tournament, shape up against SA Blue.
Then it’s the likes of Dash Daniels, Rocco Zikarsky and the NBA Global Academy taking on a NSW side led by Harley Kent and James O’Donnell who are right among the competition favourites.
From 5pm, two of the competition’s face off as Jensen Bradtke’s Victoria meet a Queensland side with plenty of scoring power off the bench led by Will Mahoney.
Then in a stunning conclusion, Victoria and NSW will face off in the women with Hannah Wickstrom (Victoria) and Isla Juffermans (NSW) among the players to keep an eye on.
