The southern states are smiling, after South Australia capped off a strong second day at the Basketball Australia National Championships.
South Australia Blue bounced back well from their morning loss to Tasmania, to overpower a willing Australian Capital Teritory in the final game on Court 1 on Wednesday.
Led by a monstrous performance from Stephanie Formby, which included a 30 point, 11 rebound double-double, the South Australians couldn’t be stopped.
The South Australian side blasted out of the blocks with a 25-point opening quarter and never looked back on their way to a 79-58 win.
The ACT side fought valiantly, and even won the second quarter, with their bench providing an impressive 34 points in limited minutes.
It capped off a strong second day for the South Australians which included their Under-20 men’s side putting paid to ACT and the Ivor Burge Men dominating Western Australia.
South Australian monster Yaak Yaak put the hurt on a star-studded ACT team with a 23-point performance that led his side to a bruising 69-55 win.
Up against seven-footer Bowyn Beatty, Yaak showed incredible strength and a soft touch to shoot 10-20 from the field and haul in five boards.
SA now tops the tournament table in the early going and young point guard Cooper Osborne caught the eye with his toughness and ability to find the open man, dealing out 10 assists as part of a 17-point double-double.
Cam Pender, MVP of last year’s Australian Schools Championships for Lake Ginninderra College, was the ACT’s most-potent, producing 19 points, while ripping down 9 rebounds and dealing four assists.
Boomer Alex Toohey had 14 points and 8 boards but ACT lost Jordan Jonathan in the first minute of the game to a knee injury.
He will have scans to determine the severity of the injury but was unable to put any pressure on the leg and needed a wheelchair, post game.
ACT has work to do to bounce back from an 0-2 start to the tourney.
Meanwhile, NSW got their Ivor Burge men’s campaign back on track with a much-needed 50-point success over Western Australia.
Beaten convincingly by South Australia on Tuesday night, NSW found their groove on the back of a stand-out performance from Lachlan Skellet.
The 206cm 17-year-old hit 37 points as NSW ran away with a 95-45 victory. Justin Koenig and Jack Littleton both contributed 18 points for the victors.
