Regional Victoria’s best young basketballers have produced a thrilling weekend of action with the Junior Country Championships coming to a close on Sunday afternoon.
Thanks to a partnership with Basketball Victoria, the Herald Sun streamed 40 games from two courts across the weekend.
The under 16s division titles were taken home by Bendigo in a thrilling double overtime thriller against Macedon Ranges in the boys as Korumburra rallied late to beat Ballarat in the girls final.
Geelong United’s boys and Sale’s girls teams won their respective under 18s division one finals.
Division two winners were Geelong United (U16 boys), Sale (U16 girls), Hamilton (U18 boys) and Traralgon (U18 girls).

U16 Boys Division 1 GF – Bendigo 68 Macedon Ranges 64
Bendigo and Macedon Ranges have played out a rollercoaster final with the Braves prevailing on double overtime.
Dash Daniels led the way for the home side with 22 points including some big free throws in overtime.
Seth Anderson was equally as impressive with 18 points.
Willem Hanegraaf almost willed Macedon Ranges to victory with 33 points but was fouled out in the first period of time.
U18 Boys Division 1 GF – Geelong United 55 Bendigo 36
Geelong has led at every break to take home the under 18 boys title.
Joe Pike led the way with 16 points while Jack Connolly added 12 of his home to get United across the line.
U18 Girls Division 1 GF – Sale 62 Warrnambool 28
Sale has produced a powerful performance to be crowned the best under 18s girls basketball team in regional Victoria.
Jemma Birss single-handedly matched Warrnambool’s score with 28 points of her in a dominant display.
She hit the bottom of the net three times from deep.
Ashley Centra, Chantelle James and Kyra Webb were also impressive in the win.
U16 Girls Division 1 GF – Korumburra 49 Ballarat 45
Korumburra has come from behind to take home the under 16 girls division title in a thriller against Ballarat.
Krystal Arnason dominated inside to finish with 19 points while Chelsea Fox added 16 of her own.
“It was bloody awesome to see the girls continuously work hard,” Korumburra coach Chloe Hogg said.
“They played six games of basketball over the weekend, it was amazing to watch.
“For the girls to show such amazing composure and hit big shots at 15 years of age is amazing.”
U16 Boys Division 1 SF – Bendigo 56 Warrnambool 36
Dash Daniels has inspired Ballarat into a grand final with 17 points against Warrnambool.
The Braves started like a house on fire and in the end it was enough to get the job done. They’ll now face Macedon Ranges in the final.
U18 Boys Division 1 SF – Geelong United 47 Ballarat 44
Geelong United have earned their way into the grand final after 15 points from Max Zalakos. United got the job done in overtime.
They’ll now face the Bendigo Braves.
U16 Girls Division 1 SF – Ballarat 48 Traralgon 32
Charlie McKinnon has top scored with 12 points to guide Ballarat through to the grand final. They’ll now face the Korumburra Wildcats.
U18 Girls Division 1 SF – Sale 43 Wodonga 29
Chantelle James has stood up in the big moments to lead Sale through to the under 18s grand final. The Sonics will now face Warrnambool.
U16 Boys Division 2 QF – Mildura 39 Sale 36
Mildura has booked its place in the final four of division two action on the back of a 15-point performance from Zac De Rosa.
U18 Boys Division 2 QF – Echuca 39 Sale 37
Echuca has held on for a tense two-point win over Sale in a game where there was plenty of physicality. Jobe Shanahan top scored with 15 for the Pirates.
U16 Boys Division 1 QF – Ballarat 56 Warragul 28
Ballarat has made its way through to the final four after a dominant win over Warragul.
U18 Boys Division 1 QF – Ballarat 47 Warrnambool 24
Ballarat produced a powerful fourth quarter display to pull away from Warrnambool as Riley Dunn and Lucas Impey led the way with 10 points apiece.
U16 Girls QF – Bendigo 45 Warrnambool 41
Mia Harvey (11 points) and Holly Swatton (10 points) got the job done from deep with two three-pointers apiece to lead Bendigo into a semi-final clash on Sunday afternoon.
U18 Girls QF – Wodonga 40 Mildura 34
Wodonga’s Indie Conway has produced an incredible display of clutch shooting to lead Wodonga through to the final four. Conway hit three straight triples and 10 of her team’s last 11 points, in the final quarter to help the Wolves come away on top in a thriller.
U16 Girls QF – Sale 61 Southern Peninsula 21
Sale star Chloe Felsbourg put on a shooting masterclass with 28 points to lead the Sonics into the final four with a big win over Southern Peninsula.
U18 Girls QF – Horsham 43 Bellarine 40
Horsham has held on to book its semi-final spot fending off a spirited comeback from the Storm.
Bellarine thought it had hit the front with 11 seconds remaining but the three-pointer was called off due to an illegal screen.
The Hornets were eventually able to run down the clock and run out winners.
U18 Boys – Geelong United 95 Wonthaggi 67
Geelong United and Wonthaggi played out a thrilling game to end the game with the final quarter dominated by some high flying action which got plenty of support from the crowd.
U16 Boys – Whittlesea 69 Maffra 44
Whittlesea picked up a crucial win to end its day on Saturday with a 25-point victory over Maffra.
U18 Boys – Traralgon 45 Pakenham 41
Tyler Anderson posted 13 big points to help Traralgon win a thriller against Pakenham in a contest played at an outstanding pace.
U16 Boys – Bendigo 66 Southern Peninsula 27
Zane Connick led the way with 17 points as Bendigo ran out big winners to close out their day one action.
U18 Girls – Shepparton 40 Horsham 33
Isabel Whitelaw stamped her authority on the contest with 17 points to lift Shepparton after a slow start to a seven-point win.
U16 Girls – Korumburra 51 Warragul 34
Chelsea Fox has led Korumburra with 15 points to help guide her side to an important win on Saturday evening.
U18 Girls – Mildura 50 Bellarine 27
Indiana Spratt put on a dominant showing for Mildura as the Heat used a fast start before running away with a big win against the Bellarine Storm.
U16 Girls – Warrnambool 47 Sale 28
Warrnambool has come away with a comfortable 19-point win over Sale with Poppy Myers leading the way with 11 points.
U16 Boys – Shepparton 61 Maffra 35
Steele Chapman produced a strong 18-point display which included a three-pointer on the final buzzer to guide Shepparton to a 26-point win. Riley Onley finished with 17 points of his own.
U18 Boys – Bendigo 54 Warrnambool 36
Bendigo made it two wins from two with an 18-point win over Warrnambool. It followed the host’s win over Echuca earlier in the day.

Riley Morehu has produced a fantastic shooting display to lead Warragul to a thrilling one-point win over Bendigo in a game which could have easily gone either way.
U18 Boys- Traralgon 41 Colac 32
Ben Waller has led Traralgon to a nine-point win over Colac with 13 points as the T-Birds ran away with the game in the last quarter.
U16 Girls- Geelong 34 Warragul 29
Poppy Stevens dominated from the outset with 21 points to help lift Geelong United to their first win of the competition against Warragul.
U18 Girls – Bendigo 36 Southern Peninsula 28
Lavinia Cox has lit up Bendigo Stadium with 11 points to lead the tournament hosts to an eight-point win over Southern Peninsula on Saturday afternoon.
U16 Girls- Warrnambool 59 Portland 22
Warrnambool put on a three-point shooting clinic headlined by a 21-point effort from Molly McLaren to run away with a big win over its southwest rivals.
U18 Girls – Sale 49 Traralgon 37
A dominant third quarter helped Sale to a 12-point win over Traralgon as Kyra Webb led the way with 20 points.
U16 Boys – Wangaratta 42 Mildura 37
Wangaratta has held on for a thrilling five-point win over Mildura largely in part to 11 points from Cooper Newton.
U18 Boys – Geelong United 60 Bellarine 41
A game high 12 points from Bailey Bruce has given Geelong United a 19-point win over a Bellarine Storm side who refused to go down without a fight.
U16 Boys – Warrnambool 48 Wodonga 24
A 22-point performance from Charlie McKinnon helped guide Warrnambool to a 24-point winner over Wodonga.
U18 Boys – Ballarat 59 Hamilton 19
Ballarat put on a clinic to run away 40-point winners against Hamilton with Lucas Impey leading the way with 14 points including a big dunk.
U16 Girls – Ballarat 52 Bendigo 28
Lily Woodland Boyanton (15 points) and Charlie McKinnon (13) have combined for 28 points in strong performances to lead Ballarat to a big win over tournament hosts Bendigo.
U18 Girls – Shepparton 33 Wodonga 29
Eleven points from Shepparton’s Hannah Onley proved critical for the Gators as they held on to beat a spirited Wolves outfit on Saturday morning.
Under 16 Girls – Traralgon 65 Wodonga 13
Traralgon has got their tournament off to a perfect start thanks to dominant displays from Charlie Hamilton (14 points), Hannah Smith (12) and Grace Van Tilburg (12) in a big win over Wodonga.
Under 18 Girls – Sale 67 Echuca 19
Ash Centra produced a strong performance, with 16 points, to lead Sale to a huge win over Echuca.
Chantelle James (13 points) and Kyra Webb (12 points) were also impressive for the Sonics.
COUNTRY CHAMPS TO LIGHT UP BENDIGO
Bendigo Basketball Stadium is set to play host to 26 associations from across Victoria for the under 16 and 18 championships with 10 courts to be used throughout the weekend.
Basketball Victoria’s leagues, events and statistics administrator Matt Royal said the event was exciting which had previously featured a range of famous names.
“We’re excited to see the Junior Country Championships return in 2022 and having the Under-18 and Under-16 events back under the one roof,” Royal said.
“This is an incredible tournament for Country associations to showcase their representative skills on the big stage as well as an amazing springboard for talented juniors to move into state representative and senior ranks.
“There have been many incredible Country stars make their mark on this tournament with the likes of Jaz Shelley, Dyson Daniels, Matthew Dellavedova, Jade Melbourne, Jack White and many more shining on this stage.”
