WATCH THE JUNIOR COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS LIVE THIS WEEKEND
While it is only the first step along a big junior representative pathway, already there has been players who have proven they belong at that level.
Here’s a look at some of the players you should be keeping an eye out for.
HUNTER COUNDON
Macedon Ranges (Boys)
Coundon is a tenacious point guard who plays bigger than his size often out rebounding much larger opponents. He is quick and has exceptional ball handling skills and is as comfortable getting to the basket through traffic as he is shooting the 3.
MAYA COYSH
Wodonga Wolves (Girls)
Coysh is a player who has improved substantially this year and has really cemented her place in the Wolves’ team. She is lightning quick and has the ability to cut through the paint to finish. She plays much taller than her height and has a talent for finding the ball. She easily adapts to the conditions of the game and is always willing work hard for the good of the team.
KARLROY DAMING
Foster Breakers (Boys)
Daming is combo guard who scores points at will from anywhere on the court. After leading the Breakers to the Division 3 semi-final at last year’s state championships, Daming looks set to light up this weekend’s competition.
SAM LUPO
Myrtleford Breakers (Boys)
Lupo is his team’s most dominant player and is showing amazing abilities at both ends of the court so far in 2022. Scoring comes easy for the top age under 12 athlete as he isn’t afraid to attack the rim or shoot from outside. He is a difficult player to defend against. His length is one of his biggest influences on the game at the defensive end.
XAVIER MILLAR
Myrtleford Breakers (Boys)
Millar has come from nowhere in his first season of basketball making a major impact for his club. He is Myrtleford’s starting five and has shown he has plenty of potential at both ends of the floor. The club is excited by his development moving forward.
EDIE MORTLOCK
Maryborough Blazers (Girls)
Mortlock has been described as a player “with the heart of an ox who always gives 100 per cent” by her club. She is a strong two-way runner and can produce a wonderfully accurate shot. She loves a bit of banter on the court as well.
MAISY MOSCROP
Wodonga Wolves (Girls)
A talented player with a high basketball IQ who is capable of pushing the pace of the game when she spots an opportunity. Moscrop is comfortable leading her team and is a complete player, working equally hard on offence and defence. She is adept at controlling the tempo of the game and possesses advanced finishing skills.
PHOEBE PORTER
Maryborough Blazers (Girls)
A tall and athletic player, Porter gives her all for the team every minute she is on the court. Despite being new to representative basketball this season, she has shown terrific skills with her rebounding and shooting standouts.
OLI ROSS
Maryborough Blazers (Boys)
In his second season as a Blazer, the point guard is continuing to work hard at both ends of the court. He has displayed terrific ball handling and game sense. Make sure to keep an eye out for Ross’ speed and quick passes.
BILLY RUMPFF
Maryborough Blazers (Boys)
Rumpff is a versatile player who is developing into a great leader on the court. He can play across different positions and is a big threat under the ring at both ends of the floor.
HARLEY STORR
Foster Breakers (Boys)
A big bruising centre who protects the paint at all costs. While being the Breakers defensive anchor, Storr is an aggressive scorer who constantly is putting pressure on opposing teams defence.
