An intense four days of competition are over and the winners of the Australian Water Polo League KAP7 Cup in Adelaide have been decided.
The tournament, which featured eight matches exclusively live streamed by News Corp, ended on Sunday with the dominant Queensland Thunder crowned champions in both the women’s and men’s draws.
The Sunshine State sides both went undefeated in the event at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre against the combined Adelaide/Hobart Jets and new club Victorian Phoenix.
Relive all the action in the replays and match wraps below.
(Men’s) QUEENSLAND THUNDER 21 d VICTORIAN PHOENIX 6
Queensland Thunder’s men finished undefeated and with the KAP7 Cup after taking care of the Victorian Phoenix in the final match on Sunday.
While the Phoenix started the game well, giving the Thunder some trouble in the first quarter, the champions got on top after the break and powered away to prevail convincingly, 21-6.
Queensland captain Rhys Howden finished off his tournament with a flourish, putting through five goals to take his total to 18 and lead all comers on the men’s goalscoring leaderboard.
Marcus Berehulak (three goals), Billy Miller, William Downes, Jack Fodor, Reilly Townsend and William Valentine (two) were the Thunder’s other multiple scorers.
Jamie Ogilvie-Lee netted a hat-trick for the Phoenix.
The Victorian side ended its return to the competition with one win from four matches.
(Women’s) QUEENSLAND THUNDER 30 d VICTORIAN PHOENIX 2
In a performance which encapsulated its dominance of the competition, Queensland Thunder signed off as the women’s KAP7 Cup Adelaide tournament champions with a thumping win on Sunday.
The Thunder downed the Victorian Phoenix 30-2 in their final game of the event, which they went through undefeated.
Queensland scored 114 goals and conceded just 10 across its four games and the side featuring several national representatives was rarely troubled.
Against the Phoenix, the Thunder piled on nine goals to one in the opening term and did not let up, extending their lead to 16-2 by half-time.
They then did not give up a goal in a stout second-half defensive display.
Charlize Andrews, who finished with a competition-high 23 scores across the four matches, bagged seven goals to lead the way for the Thunder.
Alice Williams (five goals), Abby Andrews, Bridget Leeson-Smith and Matilda Moore (four each) were also prolific.
Veteran Rowie Webster and Zoe Hille were the Phoenix’s two goalscorers.
(Men’s) VICTORIAN PHOENIX 12 d ADELAIDE/HOBART JETS 10
It came down to the wire but the Victorian Phoenix had just enough in the tank to hold off a late charge from the Adelaide/Hobart Jets as the competition’s newest side snared their first victory in the men’s draw.
The Jets, who defeated the Phoenix by a goal in their first meeting on Friday, trailed 8-4 heading into the final term but charged home to comeback to within a goal in the dying minutes.
However they left their run too late, Victoria holding on through a score to Lachlan Barclay with 20 seconds remaining to take the 12-10 win in an entertaining match.
Barclay finished with four goals, Jamie Ogilvie-Lee netted two and Darcy Holdsworth added two.
Alex Murphy (three), Daniel Hall, Nic Maddern (two) and Sam McKenzie were the scorers for the Jets.
(Women’s) VICTORIAN PHOENIX 11 d Adelaide/Hobart Jets 5
A five-goal to zero second quarter has set up victory for the Victorian Phoenix while condemning the Adelaide/Hobart Jets to a winless start to the women’s season.
The Phoenix grabbed their second triumph of the KAP7 Cup over the Jets in an 11-5 result on Saturday night.
A cagey opening saw the Phoenix take a 1-0 lead into the first break thanks to a penalty converted by Poppy Phillips.
The Jets hit back with their first through Tasmanian Lily Zeeman in the second but from there the Victorians were able to take control and opened up a 6-1 advantage at the main break.
Phillips, Emily McGowan, Zoe Hille and Lucinda Haig shared the load, scoring two goals each for the Phoenix.
Zeeman, Eliza Plouffe, Sarah Fleming, Tahlia Scipioni and captain Sophie Munchenberg all recorded singles for the Jets.
(Men’s) QUEENSLAND THUNDER 12 ADELAIDE/HOBART JETS 3
Queensland has overpowered a spirited Adelaide/Hobart side to continue its undefeated run in the competition.
After a cagey opening half, the Thunder flexed their muscles in the third and fourth quarters and swam away with a 12-3 win over the host club on Saturday.
Jets goalkeeper Joey Parnis kept the visitors at bay for much of the opening term with some solid saves before Queensland skipper Rhys Howden scored the first to give his side the lead at the first change.
Billy Miller opened proceedings for the Thunder in the second, Howden buried another shortly after and then William Downes added a third as the Thunder began to open up a gap.
A nice cross-cage finish from Josh Wylie just before half-time gave the Jets their first of the match and hope they could work their way back into the contest.
But, with Adelaide/Hobart not taking advantage of limited opportunities when they arose, Queensland picked its opponents apart in the second half in an experienced display.
Howden finished with five goals for the Thunder and Miller bagged four, while Wylie, Alex Murphy and Nic Maddern got on the scoresheet for the Jets.
(Women’s) QUEENSLAND THUNDER 28 d ADELAIDE/HOBART JETS 1
The Adelaide/Hobart Jets continue to search for their first KAP7 Cup victory after a tough morning in the pool against Queensland Thunder.
It was another strong display from the tournament standout Thunder, who made it three successive wins to begin the campaign with a 28-1 triumph on Saturday morning.
Queensland - boasting a strong side featuring several Aussie Stingers representatives - took a commanding 13-0 lead into half-time through their dominance, which was converted well with lethal shooting.
Youngster Tayla Dawkins managed to peg one back when she scored the Jets’ first goal in the third but the Thunder continued to stifle the opposition by way of relentless pressure, like it has all tournament.
The Jets best defensive display came in the last quarter, holding Queensland to four goals.
Charlize Andrews, Kasey Dalziel and Bridget Leeson-Smith all scored four each for the Thunder in an evenly-spread performance.
(Men’s) QUEENSLAND THUNDER 18 d VICTORIAN PHOENIX 10
The Victorian Phoenix fell short in their AWL debut, going down to Queensland in a fighting performance in the men’s KAP7 Cup clash on Friday.
A back-and-forth opening term had the Phoenix right in the mix as they trailed by three goals at the first break before the Thunder star Billy Miller scored a triple in the second quarter to give his side an 11-5 lead at half-time.
Victoria remained in the contest in an admirable showing but could not contain the likes of Queensland’s Miller (five goals), captain Rhys Howden (six) and Marcus Berehulak (four), who starred for the Thunder in the 18-10 victory.
Jamie Ogilvie-Lee and Cameron Gilmour (two each) got on the scoresheet for the Phoenix while goalkeeper Oliver Purcell made some key stops.
The Victorian side has been entered into the AWL this season after the state has not participated in recent years.
The Thunder meanwhile made it two from two to begin the tournament after securing a 10-6 triumph over the FYFE Adelaide/Hobart Jets on Thursday night.
(Women’s) QUEENSLAND THUNDER 25 d VICTORIAN PHOENIX 3
A relentless Queensland Thunder quickly stamped its authority as the dominant side in the women’s KAP7 Cup in Adelaide.
The Thunder, coming off a big victory over Adelaide/Hobart the night before, did not take long to assert themselves in the first live streamed match of the tournament against a young Victorian Phoenix, recording a resounding 25-3 victory.
Queensland put on the first four goals in the opening minutes before Victoria was able to stem the flow momentarily with a score of its own.
But it would be short lived as the Thunder put another two balls in the net by the end of the first quarter.
From there the impressive Bridget Leeson-Smith (six goals), Charlize Andrews (six) and Abby Andrews (five) took over.
The Thunder’s defensive pressure paid off in spades at the other end, sparking several counter-attack scores as they created a string of offensive opportunities.
But the largely inexperienced Phoenix also had their moments in the fledgling club’s first competitive hit out.
Experienced triple Olympian Rowie Webster was strong for the Phoenix and scored one of their three goals alongside Emily McGowan and Poppy Phillips.

PREVIEW: JETS SET FOR RETURN TO POOL
Fresh energy, new faces and interstate additions are set to power FYFE Adelaide/Hobart Jets’ return to the pool after almost two years on the sidelines, according to men’s captain Joey Parnis.
For the first time, South Australian and Tasmanian players will join forces as the combined club plays host to the Australian Water Polo League KAP7 Cup.
The national competition – set to return after a two-year Covid-enforced break – will be live streamed by News Corp with 88 matches broadcast across the men’s and women’s 2022 seasons.
A restructured league began with the first stage of the KAP7 Cup in Sydney this month featuring NSW teams.
SA/TAS, Victorian and Queensland sides will do battle in the second event of the cup at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre from February 3-6.
News Corp will live stream eight games on February 4-6, including four matches featuring the hometown FYFE Adelaide/Hobart Jets.
Goalkeeper and men’s skipper Parnis said he was excited and optimistic ahead of the new campaign.
“We’ve had a lot of development with our younger players the last few years and this year Hobart is involved, so we’ll have a few Tassie players coming down as well,” Parnis, 24, said.
“I think having some fresh faces will bring a lot of energy to the team.”
The Jets, which have yet to win a men’s or women’s AWL title, will have a focus on youth and development in both sides in 2022.
But women’s captain Sophie Munchenberg said the addition of a handful of Hobart players in each team would drive competition for spots and better results.
“It definitely gives the opportunity for juniors to strive to play in a high level competition, knowing that we’re combining with another state there’s definitely more pressure to get into the team,” Munchenberg said.
“We want to show the other states we’ve got a lot of competitive juniors coming up the ranks.”
SEASON PREVIEW: FULL AWL SQUAD LISTS AND ANALYSIS
The Jets, Queensland Thunder and new club Victorian Phoenix – the southern state’s re-entry into the league after not participating in recent years – will compete in KAP7 Cup Adelaide event.
News Corp’s live stream will begin with the Phoenix and Thunder going head-to-head on Friday, February 4 before the Jets take to the pool the next day.
The results of the KAP7 Cup will determine two groups – a top six and then bottom three – to compete throughout the AWL season.
The competition was due to be a 11-team structure, but the indefinite postponement of Western Australia’s border opening forced organisers to reshuffle the tournament.
WA’s two clubs – UWA Torpedoes and Fremantle Marlins – will not compete in any of the pre-season tournaments, but it is hoped they will take part in the playoff series.
