Andreas Stefanakis is flying in his side’s return to the VAFA’s top flight.

The Old Haileybury small forward, who is on Box Hill’s VFL list, is currently the competition’s leading goalkicker with 17 goals from six games.

He will be a key factor in the Bloods’ chances against St Kevin’s when the pair clash on KommunityTV from 2pm on Saturday.

While the youngster has kicked multiple goals in all but one game, his form has “been better” in the past fortnight according to coach Daniel Ward.

He booted four goals in 10 minutes against De La Salle to swing the game in his side’s favour before three second half majors against Uni Blues last time out.

“I’m proud of how he’s going, I couldn’t be happier with him,” Ward said.

“He’s playing a tough position and cops heavy attention and scrutiny from the opposition every week. He’s got great confidence at the moment.

“He would be the first to tell you he probably wasn’t happy with his form overall to start the year. But it’s on us as a coaching group as well to get the best out of him.”

Stefanakis is playing in a Bloods’ forward line which boasts other young VFL listed talent including Charlie Harrop and Harry Jones.

Old Haileybury returned to the Premier Men’s competition at the first time of asking last season, winning the Premier B flag.

The Bloods had been relegated at the end of 2023.

“When we were in A-grade a couple of years ago, we were an extremely young side and now the guys have got a couple more years experience,” Ward said.

“There’s a lot of talent who have taken some big steps forward in their footy. We’ve managed to get some onto VFL lists which has been a real win for us.”

Ward’s side has made a 4-2 start to the season to emerge as a finals threat.

They currently sit in fourth, ahead of St Bernard’s on percentage but share the same record as SKOB and Old Xavs.

“There’s a greater belief in the group,” Ward said.

“We’ve really worked on developing and improving our game plan. There’s greater depth playing a part.”
