LIVESTREAM: NAB League, Sandringham v Oakleigh

They’re back!

Some of the NAB League’s best players will return to Victoria’s elite junior competition this weekend when the Sandringham Dragons and Oakleigh Chargers face off on Saturday afternoon.

With school footy now finished, NAB League clubs are preparing for their final game of the home-and-away season.

The Chargers will have a host of players back into the side, including some who were recently invited to the NAB AFL Draft Combine.

They include Alwyn Davey Jnr, Blake Drury, Max Gruzewski, Matthew Jefferson, Luke Teal, Elijah Tsatas and Josh Weddle.

Touted first-round draft pick George Wardlaw will miss the clash through a hamstring injury.

Oakleigh talent manager Jy Bond said the weekend would be a good “tune up” for the Chargers playing group.

“The past week or so has been about the boys getting used to playing together again,” he said.

“We haven’t had the majority of the squad we’ll have this weekend since about Round 4. They’re pumped to be getting back into the NAB League and playing together again.

“It will take some time for them to adjust to each other again but we’re confident that won’t cause any issues.”

The Dragons will have plenty of quality of their own including Will Ashcroft, who recently committed to the Brisbane Lions as a father-son selection in this year’s draft.

Meanwhile, his teammates, Charlie Clarke, Olli Hotton, Cameron McKenzie, Toby McMullin and Harry Sheezel, earned their own Draft Combine invites earlier this week.

Sandringham talent lead Mark Wheeler is excited about Saturday’s game.

“It’s always nice when you can look at a list and have almost a full group to pick from,” Wheeler said.

“Everyone is up and about for what should be a really good challenge against a quality outfit. There is going to be a period of adjustment, I think a few boys could be dusty early with the unique rules we have in the NAB League including the 6-6-6 and high density rules.

“It’s been about 12 or 13 weeks since they’ve played at this level.”

Both sides are simply playing this weekend to find out where they’ll enter next weekend’s wildcard round as neither can finish in the top three.

Wildcard round will see teams who finish from fourth to 13th enter a knockout style format competition to progress to the quarter-finals.

The top three teams for the season will enjoy a week off.

HOW WILDCARD WEEKEND WORKS
