Replay: NAB League Girls - Round 7 - Western Jets v Brisbane Lions

The Western Jets have sent a clear warning shot across the bow of the NAB League girls competition with a 38-2 dispatch of the Brisbane Lions Academy.

In what was a scrappy affair, it was the Jets willingness to get their head over the loose ball and their unrelenting defence that proved the difference.

The Lions fought valiantly throughout the four quarters, but had no answers inside 50 as the Jets continued to up the pressure in defence.

The win makes it five-straight for the Jets who remain in the hunt to finish on top of the NAB League metro division, sitting one win adrift of the undefeated Dandenong Stingrays.

MATCH PREVIEW: History brewing in Melbourne’s western suburbs

There is history brewing in the western suburbs.

The Western Jets have broken new ground as a club this season, securing four wins on the bounce for the first time in the NAB League.

They will be determined to make it five-in-a-row against the Brisbane Lions Academy in Tullamarine on Sunday in a match that will be exclusively live streamed by the Herald Sun.

The four-match win streak is a major milestone for a club that has been in the league since its inception in 1992 and has them sitting second to the undefeated Dandenong Stingrays.

But according to Jets coach Robbie Chancellor — and more importantly his entire playing group — the hard work is far from over.

“The bond and connection that has been forged in the squad, it has the girls confident,” Chancellor said. “That confidence also comes from winning.

“We are not a region that has historically won a lot, but there is players that believe in their own ability and what we are achieving.

“This is the first time we have won more than three games in a season, I am sure we have definitely never won four in a row. Being competitive is one thing but actually putting a nail in teams and getting those wins is crucial.

“The girls have been really hard on themselves. At the end of last year we discussed the fact we had a goal to play finals this season. While we are happy where we are, the job isn’t done.”

The Jets have built their run of form off the back of a free-flowing, handball first style that has run opposition sides ragged through the midfield.

Built on a foundation of top tier talent including midfield duo Montana Ham and Charlotte Baskaran, but including speed and skill across the park, the ‘Jets Style’ has been swift and precise in its execution.

But Chancellor said there was no time for his side to become complacent in their success as a true unknown awaits them this weekend against the Lions.

“Obviously during our preparation for each team, you do a bit of research and get a sense for their strengths and areas which you can exploit,” he said.

“But against a visiting side like the Lions, you go in a little bit blind.

“We are catching them after five games (of the season), so there is enough information about our own game that we can focus on. The preparation for the week will be tidying up our own areas that we need to.

“If we do that, we are confident the form we are in at the moment that we can beat any team.”

The Jets and Lions will clash at the Hangar, Tullamarine at 2.15pm on Sunday with the match exclusively streamed by News Corp.
