Eastern Ranges produced a dominant display to see off the challenge of Calder Cannons by 36 points in an entertaining NAB League contest on Saturday.

The 90-54 victory was built on some excellent goalkicking and a solid four-quarter team effort.

They led by 17 points at halftime and had extended the margin out to 31 points by the final change.

The Ranges have now won two matches in a row after last week’s success over Northern Knights.

PREVIEW: Young guns on parade in important clash

The race for a place in the NAB League finals is set to step up another gear this weekend when the Calder Cannons host Eastern Ranges in a crucial clash.

Both sides enter Saturday’s game at Highgate Recreation Reserve with three wins for the season, which sees them sit just outside the top eight.

And this weekend there will be greater opportunities afforded to some of the club’s younger players with the under-18 national championships set to get underway.

Eastern talent manager Daniel Ryan highlighted Cody Anderson as one player to watch after an outstanding debut against the Northern Knights last time out.

The Healesville product, who already has senior footy experience with his local club, finished with 13 disposals, 13 tackles and a goal in the 14-point win.

“Cody’s a guy we’re really looking forward to watching over the next couple of years,” Ryan said.

“It’s brilliant he has been exposed to some senior footy from the age of 15 and being in the NAB League program is only going to help him further.”

Fellow Healesville representative Cam Nyko is also enjoying a fantastic season, according to Ryan.

He labelled his 22-disposal against the Knights as “outstanding”.

“He’s someone who has been stepping up at different points of the season,” Ryan said.

“We believe we’ve got some really good young talent in our group and now it’s an opportunity for some other guys to take centre stage with the national championships on.

“Sometimes you just don’t know what you might find when you give a kid a go.”

Calder enter the clash on the back of a 42-point loss to the Geelong Falcons and they’ll be without Paul Pascu who has been selected in the Vic Metro side.

But talent manager Matt Burton is confident the Cannons “young and raw” group will be able to stand up.

“It’s been fantastic to see our guys improve from the start of pre-season to now,” he said.

“We should get a few players back with school footy taking a break as well which means a different group gets the opportunity to come in and have an impact.”

Among the better performers in the loss to the Falcons were Kade Mueller who finished with 31 disposals, a season high.

Eastern has five representatives in the Vic Metro team including Nick Watson, Kai Windsor, Caleb Windsor, Callum Verrell and Lewis Hayes.
