Replay: AFL Coates Talent League Week 17 - Western Jets v Murray Bushrangers (Girls)

Western Jets held Murray Bushrangers to just one point for over three quarters as they produced one of their best performances of the Coates Talent League Girls season to grab a 30-point victory.

The Jets have only won twice this season - and both victories have come against this opponent. They beat them by 51 points back on June 24 and had this one under control from the second quarter onwards.

The scores were locked at 7-7 at quarter time, but a two-goal second quarter proved decisive as they jumped out to a 12-point lead..

The Bushrangers kicked a behind in the third quartrer for their only points of the second half and the Jets would have won by more had they kicked straighter, eventually settling for a 5.8 (38) to 1.2 (8) success.

PREVIEW

Lou-Lou Field and Sierra Grieves are still more than 12 months away from being eligible for the AFLW Draft.

But you could understand why astute AFLW clubs might already have an eye on the Western Jets duo.

The pair are enjoying standout bottom age seasons in the Coates Talent League, showing why they will be stars of the future.

Their next challenge is to lead the Jets to their second win of the season when they face the Murray Bushrangers from 2pm at Highgate Reserve in Craigieburn on Saturday with the game live streamed on KommunityTV.

Field has become one of the most impressive rebounding defenders in the competition this season, averaging 18.9 disposals – 15.4 of which are kicks – a week.

Meanwhile, Grieves is racking up almost 28 touches a week, up from 12.6 in last year’s premiership winning season.

Last week, she finished with 37 disposals and three goals in a loss to the Geelong Falcons.

Jets talent manager Luke Williams said the pair had shown great confidence after being given a shot for Vic Metro.

“Both girls have been fantastic this year and deserved the opportunity to represent their state,” he said.

“They’ve taken onboard every piece of advice in order to try and improve themselves. They’re playing like players who should be at that level.

“This year has been a little different to last, we’ve been able to give more players a go which is really exciting. We lost a core group to AFLW and VFLW footy but that’s what happens every two years.”

The Jets will enter the weekend’s clash as favourites having comfortably accounted for the Bushrangers when the two sides met last month.

“It was a game where we probably moved the footy the best we have all year,” he said.

“Last week against Geelong was probably the best we’ve played holistically. We’re hoping to replicate our performance from earlier in the year.

“We want the girls to play to their strengths of contested ball and defensively, then add a little bit of flair to that.”
