West Brunswick Magpies have kept their finals hopes alive with a 31-point victory over Monash Blues in a big VAFA Premier Womens clash.

In cold and wet conditions at Ransford Oval, the Magpies kicked the opening goal in the second quarter after trailing by just one point early.

The Magpies would then control the remainder of the game, booting 5.3 (33) to 0.2 (2) and now sit sixth on the ladder with six rounds to go.

Earlier, the Magpies were too strong for the Blues in the women’s reserves, coming from behind in the second half to claim a 6.3 (39) to 3.3 (21) victory.

West Brunswick were kept goalless in the first quarter, only to trail by two points at halftime.

But a run of 4.2 to 1.0 in the second half boosted them to take victory.

PREVIEW

In year two in the West Brunswick hot seat, Marnee Silver believes their side is on the right path in the VAFA Premier Women’s competition.

Last year, the Magpies won seven games, and with that many games left to play finals this year, they remain in the hunt for finals footy.

West Brunswick heads into Saturday’s clash against Monash Blues two games outside of the top-four.

But they’ll be favourites against Monash who are playing in Premier Women’s for the first time.

“I feel like we’ve been getting more confidence with the style we want to play,” Silver said of their side’s growth this season.

“We’ve taken some massive steps forward with our development. Against every side we need to bring our best footy, you can never underestimate the opposition.

“We’re coming off a double bye and I think we’ve been able to handle it better compared to last season, we don’t have as many players away on holiday.”

A trio of Magpies will be looking to continue their strong after returning from Big V VAFA duties during the byes.

Sophie Stewart and Kristy De Pellegrino are back from rep duty.

Kristy De Pellegrini, Sophie Stewart and Taylah Watson were all part of the win against the Perth Football League in Western Australia.

“It was terrific for our girls to have that opportunity,” Silver said.

“But we know it takes a whole group effort to win games and stay in the race to play finals.”

Both teams are expected to be greeted with wet conditions at McAlister Oval on Saturday, but Silver believes their side will be prepared.

“Our last game before the break was wet and we responded well,” she said.

“We know it will be another grind. We can’t move the footy as quickly as we normally would like, but it’s all about territory.”
