At halftime, there was just 11 points the difference and it looked likely VAFA Premier Men’s big guns St Kevin’s were in for yet another tight finish.

But after kicking eight behinds in a wayward first half, they suddenly found their range, with a five-goal final quarter putting the seal on an impressive 53-point success over University Blacks

After three successive wins by a combined 18 points, this 102-49 success must have come as welcome relief for coach Anthony Lynch.

They found themselves trailing by six points after a disjointed first quarter before four goals catapulted them to a 39-26 halftime lead.

William Pfeiffer kicked the second of his two goals early in the third quarter and they never looked back. Sam Tucker kicked three goals while one og the highlights for Uni Blacks was incredible mark from Ayui Makieng.

It's now five wins in a row for the St Kevin’s VAFA Premier Reserves team after they handled the tough conditions better than University Blacks to grab a 39-point win on Saturday.

Fresh off recent wins over University Blues, Fitzroy, Old Scotch and Old Brighton, SKOB took control of this game early and never relented, eventually winning 59-18.

The success has them in prime form for the dream match-up with unbeaten leaders Old Xaverians next weekend. Old Xavs won their previous meeting 46-45 earlier in the season.

PREVIEW

St Kevins have roared up to second on the VAFA Premier men’s ladder on the back of three inspiring wins – and coach Anthony Lynch couldn’t be more delighted.

SKOB went down to University Blues by 12 points four weeks ago but have since beaten Fitzroy, Old Scotch and Old Brighton by a combined 18 points to make their move.

Two weeks ago they beat unbeaten leaders Old Brighton by just two points – and that was after trailing by six points at three-quarter-time.

Fresh off the King’s Birthday weekend bye, Lynch’s men host University Blacks, who bounced back from three losses in a row to beat Fitzroy last time out.

Asked whether he feels second place is reflective of where his side is at, Lynch said their ability to handle pressure in tight situations shows they are worthy of their lofty position.

“Well. the ladder doesn’t lie, so I think it is,” he said.

“When you’re fortunate enough to win those close games, you probably deserve to be in that position.

“Old Brighton were previously undefeated and it was decided by under a kick, so clearly they’re one of the best teams in the comp.

“We were thrilled to get away with that result, but if any of those results hadn’t gone our way we’d probably be sitting third, fourth or fifth.”

Sam Tucker has been among the goals in recent weeks.

Lynch isn’t taking the three-win Uni Blacks lightly as four of their five losses this year have been by 12 points or less.

“Uni have been super competitive, I think they’ve won three but they’ve been in every game they’ve been beaten,” he said.

“I have said it plenty of times, it’s an even comp, so we’ll need to be at our best to win – thankfully it’s at our home ground where we’ve performed well this year.

“The bye came at a good time to freshen up mentally and physically, but the boys are pretty keen to get back into it against Blacks.”

If St Kevin’s finds themselves in another nailbiting finish, Lynch hopes his group has learnt enough over the past month to triumph once more.

“It builds incredible belief that if you get into that position again, you know what to do, you know the situation,” he said.

“No matter what the score, we will never give up on the contest, which is awesome.

“No doubt in the remainder of the year we will need to draw on that again.”
