Replay: Old Scotch v St Kevin's — VAFA Women's semi final

St Kevin’s are through to the VAFA women’s grand final after a tremendous second-half fightback saw them reel in Old Scotch for a memorable eight-point win.

A dominant third quarter with the wind at their backs ignited the Saints after they trailed by 18 points at halftime.

Old Scotch jumped their rivals in the first half with three goals, keeping St Kevin’s to just three points, but momentum swung quickly in the third term.

Led by Sarah Cameron up forward, who had been well held, St Kevin’s took control of the contest late in the quarter with four consecutive goals.

Their lightning fightback turning an 18-point deficit into a nine-point lead.

With territory paramount in the windy conditions, Cameron also had several key possessions early in the final quarter, including a mark 25m out before kicking a crucial goal into the wind.

The major extended the Saints’ lead to 15 points as rain began to fall.

Maggie Wilson goaled late for the Cardinals in the last quarter to cut the margin to eight, but the clock was not their friend.

Old Scotch continued lifted their workrate thereafter and the ball remained in their forward territory for most of the final minutes.

But some telling marks and a couple of free kicks in their backline sealed a famous 5.6 (36) to 4.4 (28) win for St Kevin’s.

Old Scotch will now back up in next week’s preliminary final with a resurgent Caulfield Grammarians.

PREVIEW

The Mottram sisters have combined at both ends of the field to keep Caulfield Grammarians dreams of a VAFA Premier Women’s title alive.

Caulfield’s finals campaign will continue to the preliminary final next weekend after they held on to end defending champions Kew’s campaign 5.7 (37) to 4.9 (33) in a thrilling semi-final.

Matilda Mottram booted an important major in the second term to help the Caulfield side kick clear of their rivals, while recent Coates Talent League graduate Isla Mottram pulled off several key defensive interceptions to stave off a Kew fight back.

Kew’s captain courageous Rachael McDonough almost managed to inspire a brilliant comeback for her side kicking the only goal of the fourth quarter.

Kew kept the ball in their attacking half for most of the final term, and had several looks at goal to take the lead but in the end couldn’t find a way through the navy wall of defence.

Caulfield will now play the loser of Sunday’s qualifying semi-final between Old Scotch and St Kevin’s.

The semi-final will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV.
