Preview: How Jordan has gone to new level at Knights
We already knew Ava Jordan was an impressive young footballer.
But her development in 2023 has made her an even more exciting prospect for AFLW clubs.
And she’ll be out to lead her side to victory against the GWV Rebels on Saturday afternoon with the game set to be live streamed on KommunityTV from 11.30am.
After winning plaudits for her ball winning ability in 2022, averaging 25 touches as a midfielder, Northern Knights coaches went about trying to “add another string to her bow”.
Knights’ officials settled on Jordan as a small forward and she has delivered in spades this season.
She has five goals to her name and averages 19.6 disposals.
“If she does earn the opportunity to be on an AFLW list, it’s most likely as a small forward and that was the reason for the change,” Knights talent manager Nat Grindal said.
“Ava has really embraced the change and has been phenomenal. She’s coming back into our side this week after a couple of weeks in the Vic Metro set-up where she thrived in a similar role.
“Changing positions was all about adding strings to her bow and showing recruiters how else she could impact a game.
“Even when she’s not kicking goals, she’s setting up her teammates which is such an important part of the game.
“Her decision making and cleanliness – by hand and foot – are two areas of her game which have really stood out.”
The Knights will enter the clash against the Rebels as strong favourites as they look to secure their place in the top-four.
It’s been a tough season for the Rebels who sit in 12th place with just three wins to their name.
“We’re really excited about this weekend because it’s our last home game of the season,” Grindal said.
“It’s been nice to play at Preston City Oval this season, a ground with lots of history, because the girls hadn’t played there since 2018.
“We haven’t played the Rebels yet this year but we’re expecting a tough game as always.”
Jordan won’t be the only future star on show at the weekend with both sides possessing plenty of talented players.
Hannah Scott, Holly Ridewood and Zoe Hargreaves are just three other Knights youngsters who are enjoying standout seasons.
For the Rebels, Molly Walton looms as a match winner while Millie Lang and Jess Rentsch could also have a big impact.
