The intermediate boys division will have a new premier after Rowville Secondary College continued their magical run to knock off reigning champions St Patrick’s Ballarat.
After an evenly poised first term, Rowville broke the game open in the second half, highlighted by a dominant final quarter, to book a place in the grand final against Parade College.
Lachie Dovaston continued his brilliant form in the competition with three goals in the 12.6 (78) to 3.9 (27) victory.
Archie Le Clerc also provided a strong presence for Rowville up forward while Jay De Varlet was super impressive in one-on-one contests.
Oliver Thompson shone throughout the four quarters, capping off his performance with a couple of goals.
Parade College vs Marcellin College
Parade College had earlier powered through to the decider with a 123-point victory over Marcellin College.
The 19.15 (129) to 0.6 (6) victory was built on high defensive pressure as Parade dominated all areas of the ground.
Tyson Gresham and Sebastian Murphy dominated the midfield, often feeding off the dominant ruck craft of the athletic Tyrone Uwanda, who powered across the field.
Vaughn Murphy enjoyed his time forward of the footy with six majors, also giving a couple off to his teammates.
The smooth moving Milun Fernando lit up the game off halfback for Parade with elite ball use to his forwards, capping off a strong performance with a goal in the last quarter.
Charlie Clearly won praise from the commentators for his performance in a tough outing for Marcellin.
PREVIEW
It might be a different St Patrick’s College Ballarat group in 2023, but they’ve still got the same hunger.
The reigning intermediate boys champions will kick start their Herald Sun Shield defence when they take on Rowville Secondary College on Tuesday from 12pm.
The game will be part of a double header which will be live streamed on KommunityTV, starting with Parade College against Marcellin College from 10am.
St Pat’s qualified after comfortably accounting for Ballarat Grammar in the final of the Ballarat Associated Schools competition.
Coach John Richards said the playing group was excited about the opportunity to create their own history.
“There’s a little bit of buzz around the place,” he said.
“The team who actually beat Ballarat Grammar won the second XVIII competition in Ballarat so this is a fantastic opportunity to represent the broader community.
“It’s always nice to win but this is going to be a fantastic opportunity for our players.
“I’m expecting Rowville to be extremely competitive considering they beat an APS school in Caulfield Grammar.”
Richards said facing off against a school from another competition did have its unknowns.
But he was confident his team’s style would be enough to stack up against the best.
“We’re not overly tall, so we’ll go for a small quick look,” he said.
“We’ll aim to put plenty of speed on the ball and use that to our advantage. I’m sure we’ll get a pretty good indication early in the game of what we’re dealing with.
“Because the guys are playing local footy and Coates Talent league we haven’t really had much of a chance to train together.
“We’ve done a couple of sessions the last few Mondays so that has been a good opportunity.
“We’re just looking forward to the experience and testing ourselves.”
