It was a game Mr Topsy Turvy would have been proud of.
The lead changed so many times that it was easy to lose count, but with this Coates Talent League boys encounter on the line, Gippsland Power emerged victorious by a solitary goal - 58-52 - over Eastern Ranges.
The Power, who now take their record to seven wins and six losses, had more shots at goal - and with a bit better accuracy may have put this game to bed earlier.
The Ranges led by two points early in the final quarter before a two-goal burst seemingly put the Power in command.
The Ranges hit back again and the game was in the balance until the very end.
REPLAY: Gippsland Power v Northern Knights (Girls)
Due to a technical issue beyond our control, we were unable to show the final quarter of the Coates Talent League girls match between Gippsland Power and Northern Knights. We apologise and are working on providing a full replay of the match as soon as possible.
It took them a little while, but when the Northern Knights hit their stride, they played some pretty decent footy.
The Knights maintained their push for the Coates Talent League girls finals with a 21-point victory - 30-9 - over Gippsland Power on Sunday.
There were just six scoring shots in the first half - and all were behinds - as the Knights led 4-2 at the main break.
Their accuracy improved in the second half and they kicked two goals in each of the third and fourth quarters to take a stranglehold on the match.
PREVIEW
Two of the AFL and AFLW’s brightest prospects will take centre stage this weekend in a massive Coates Talent League double header.
Although football fans will have to be a little patient when it comes to watching them at the top level.
Ash Centra (2024 draft eligible) and Willem Duursma (2025 draft eligible) will both be crucial cogs for the Gippsland Power’s girls and boys teams respectively at Morwell Recreation Reserve.
The double header, in which the Power girls face off against Northern Knights and the boys against Eastern Ranges, will be exclusively live streamed on KommunityTV from 11.30am on Sunday. See the full schedule below.
While the Power have struggled to put results on the board this season, gun midfielder Centra has been in impeccable form.
This season she has averaged 23 disposals in the Coates Talent League, while she also played a key role for the Vic Country side at the Women’s Under-18 National Championships.
Gippsland talent manager Scott McDougal said the club had been impressed by her year.
“She’s had a very large footy commitment in the last three weeks especially,” he said.
“AFLW fans will have to wait because she’s a bottom age player, but we’re really pleased with her development so far.”
Duursma will play alongside his brother, Zane, who is expected to be a top-10 pick in the national draft, in the boys’ clash with the high flying Eastern Ranges.
The pair are the brothers of Port Adelaide AFL and AFLW duo Xavier and Sophie.
Willem will line-up for his fourth game in the under-18 side having made waves throughout the season.
For his local club Foster he has booted 23 goals in seven senior games.
“He’s played a mixture of back and forward for us,” McDougal said.
“I think he’s going to be that utility type, the further along he goes with his career.”
McDougal said throughout the season, Gippsland’s boys and girls coaches had continued to give opportunities to under-16 players.
He said the growth of the entire playing list had been one of the great joys of season 2023.
The boys game will get underway at 1.30pm.
