Gippsland have maintained their hold on top spot in the NAB League, but their long winning streak came under real threat late on by fast-finishing Oakleigh Chargers.
The Power looked as though they had finally subdued plucky Oakleigh with an early final quarter goal surge but the Chargers kicked the final three goals and came within six points of a massive upset. Gippsland eventually won 84-78.
Very little had separated the two teams the whole match, with Oakleigh taking a one-pont advantage - 53-52 - into the final term.
PREVIEW: Huge talent on show in clash of big guns
The talent set to be on show between the Gippsland Power and Oakleigh Chargers is set to get footy lovers excited.
The NAB League clash will feature some of the best talents available across the next two AFL Drafts.
Gippsland enters the clash at the top of the ladder, undefeated through eight games while Oakleigh sits in sixth and is aiming to keep touch with the fop four.
Gippsland talent manager Scott McDougal said the team’s “core group” of leaders had been standout throughout the season.
Jacob Konstanty and Zane Duursma, the brother of Port Adelaide duo Xavier and Yasmin, have shown plenty of promise in the front half of the ground.
Konstanty has put together a well rounded season averaging 15.6 disposals, 6.9 tackles and kicking 11 goals so far.
Meanwhile, McDougal highlighted the leadership development of Nate Pipicelli and Rhys Galvin in defence.
“It’s been great to watch those boys develop over the last few months,” he said.
“Every game, every opposition has a different challenge. And that’s on top of the full cycle of the NAB League where we are dealing with injuries, travel and lots of changes to our side.
“We’ve been rapt with how they’ve embraced it.”
Oakleigh won’t be at full strength this weekend with several key players set to be missing due to injury while the Vic Metro representatives will all be rested.
Among those injured include George Wardlaw, Elijas Tsatas, Luke Teal and Jack O’Sullivan.
But that doesn’t mean there won’t be plenty of talent on show including Kynan Brown, the son of former Melbourne defender Nathan.
Chargers talent manager Jy Bond described him as a “smart moving inside midfielder who can play as a small forward or defender”.
Key defender Angus Perry is also a player to keep an eye on after an impressive NAB league debut against the Dandenong Stingrays.
“Our program at this time of year is always about opportunity — we have to navigate the APS school system and national championships as long with injuries,” Bond said.
“We always find it to be a good challenge to go down to Morwell.
“It’s a chance for another crop of kids to bob up. It’s great to see guys like Tommy Bower, the son of Nathan (a former Richmond player), who came into the side earlier in the year turn into a really good find for us. He plays through the midfield and down forward.
“Angus Curry is another really talented young man who plays in the Allies squad and is part of the GWS squad. He’s an inside, ball-winning bull with elite ball use.
“Alex Noblet came into our side earlier in the year. He’s grasped his opportunity with his elite skills which has been fantastic.”
McDougal said the Power’s list has a “really good demographic” with almost a perfect balance of bottom and top-age talents.
A couple of 19-year-olds are also on the list.
He said the start of the under 18 national championships in recent weeks had also “created opportunities” for players.
“It’s given us a chance to look at kids who have been playing some good senior footy at local level,” he said.
“That’s not just a win for us now but down the track as well.”
