Replay: NAB League Boys - Dandenong Stingrays v GWV Rebels

Dandenong overcame a tough challenge to secure a 12-point victory over GWV Rebels in an entertaining NAB League clash on Saturday.

The Stingrays dominated the first and third quarters but needed a flurry of goals early in the final term to secure the 88-76 victory.

GWV fought their way back from a massive first-quarter deficit to get within six points by halftime, but Dandenong kicked the first four goals of the third quarter and extended their lead to 36 points by the final change.

Rebels made it interesting though by kicking the first three goals of final quarter, but ultimately had too much to do.

PREVIEW: PLAYERS OUT TO PUSH  DRAFT STOCKS

The talent on display in this weekend’s NAB League clash between the Dandenong Stingrays and the GWV Rebels is as good as you’ll see all season.

Both sides have made reasonable starts to the season with the Stingrays 4-2 after six games, while the Rebels are 3-2 from their five matches to have them sitting in eighth position.

On Saturday, they’ll meet at Shepley Oval in a game which will not only help shape the ladder but will also allow players to continue boosting their draft stocks.

If the Stingrays are to come away with the four points, they’ll be hoping for another big performance from midfielder Taj Campbell-Farrell.

The 17-year-old dominated against Sandringham last Friday night as he finished with 40 disposals in a 21-point win.

“We were really happy with the way he performed, it was another strong game from Taj and we’re starting to see a lot more consistency in his numbers,” Dandenong talent lead Toby Jedwab said.

Cooper Simpson, who will be eligible to be drafted next year, is another player to keep an eye on after he produced his best performance of the season for the Stingrays last weekend.

He finished with 19 disposals and a goal.

Vic Country representative Henry Hustwaite is also enjoying a strong season averaging 22.3 disposals having only recorded under 20 once.

Jedwab said Finn Jakstas was another player to keep an eye on this weekend.

“We were really impressed with how the boys played last week,” he said.

“We still trained once a week during the time off but we maintained high standards which allowed the boys to hit the ground running against Sandringham.”

Aaron Cadman has kicked 13 goals so far this season.

The Rebels aren’t without their own talented players across all three lines.

Inside midfielder Hugh Bond is putting together a terrific season, averaging 21.4 disposals and 9.6 tackles indicating his love for the contested side of the game.

Key forward Aaron Cadman has also enjoyed a strong start to the year with 13 goals in five games including five majors in a big win over the Western Jets.

“Both of those guys enjoyed really strong pre-seasons and were able to get themselves super fit,” Rebels coach David Loader said.

“They’ve been super impressive to start the year. Felix Fogarty has been playing good footy as well. We’ve thrown him forward in the last couple of games and he finished with three goals last week.

“This week will be a good challenge against a quality Dandenong side.”
