AFL Coates Talent League Week 2 - Murray Bushrangers v Sydney Swans (Girls)
PREVIEW
For the Western Jets boys, it’s hard to get a read on what they should expect against the Sydney Swans Academy this weekend.
When the two sides meet from 2pm on Saturday, with the game live streamed on KommunityTV, the Jets are hoping to let their footy do the talking.
The season opener between the two sides will headline a massive doubleheader of Swans Academy action at Highgate Recreation Reserve, which kicks off with the girls side up against Murray Bushrangers.
“It’s a bit of sight unknown,” Jets talent manager Luke Williams said of the game.
“The boys are looking forward to an official game but it’s hard to get a read on Sydney for obvious reasons.
“We’ve enjoyed a pretty strong pre-season and the guys who run out on Saturday will have a bit of experience at this level behind them because we invested pretty heavily into the under-17 group last year.
SWANS YOUNG GUNS READY TO BATTLE VICTORIA’S BEST
“Trent Dennis-Lane is our new coach and he’s hit the ground running. He’s really caring and empathetic, trying to develop a relationship with every player.
“Everyone on the list has their own individual development plan with goals they want to achieve throughout the year.”
Co-captains Alex Tsia and Diesel Moloney are set to be two of the most important parts of the Jets’ line-up.
Their appointment into the leadership roles has highlighted more talent coming from some of Melbourne’s fastest growing regions.
Moloney and Tsia have played their junior footy at Point Cook and Hillside respectively.
“The growth in those areas is something that probably hasn’t been spoken about too much,” Williams said.
“But with more clubs appearing, we’re seeing new talent come out of there.”
BUSHRANGERS RELISHING IN OPPORTUNITIES
Across every line, the Murray Bushrangers have exciting player stories to start the new 2023 Coates Talent League girls season.
Despite losing the opening game to the Bendigo Pioneers by a point, there’s plenty of excitement heading into this weekend’s clash against the Sydney Swans Academy.
The clash will kick off our live stream doubleheader
Despite being without some of their top talents, who are spending time with the GWS Giants Academy, opportunities for other players is already paying dividends at the Bushrangers.
Among them is Kloe McElhinney, who according to Murray talent manager Mick Wilson is a “real competitor”.
She was named among her side’s best last week.
“Kloe has a lot of strong areas to her game but her real strength is her ability in the one-on-one contest,” he said.
“She’s rarely beaten. She’s a real leader out on the ground for us with the way she goes about her footy.
“Ellie Armstrong is another good story from the first game. She actually started her career at Rumbalara, which is where we played last week, it was awesome to see her play representative footy on her home ground.
“She made a really good start to the season as well.”
Despite going down to the Pioneers, Wilson and other Bushrangers officials were pleased with what they saw.
“There was plenty for us to like and carry into this week,” he said.
“We were down early and the girls managed to fight their way back into the contest.
“Sydney will be a tough challenge for us, we know they’re a strong side. We played them in a futures game (under-17s) last year and they were super impressive.
“But every game is an opportunity for our group to keep learning.”
