The New Zealander, who was named in the 2022 Eastern Football Netball League Division 1 Team of the Year, won the game off his own boot before resting at full-back for the remainder of the match.

Skipper inspires Samoa to World 9s glory

Samoan captain Paula Pavic has steered her side to the women’s AFI World 9s premiership with an electric performance.

Pavic was unstoppable across the 40 minutes, booting three goals in the first half and putting the exclamation point on an 8-0 win over Nauru in the dying stages.

The Samoan’s – kicking with a slight wind – took the sting out of the Nauru side with five unanswered goals in the first half.

Despite kicking against the breeze in the second half, the Samoan’s maintained possession to kick a further three goals.

But it was the Samoan’s ruthless nature at the other end of the ground which typified the nation’s golden standard. The Samoan defence refused to give their opposition an inch all carnival and closed out the gold medal match unbreached.

Both Samoan and Nauru made it through to the grand final ahead of the highly fancied Amazon outfit out of the United States.

Pavic’s outing was rewarded with best afield honours.

Playing in torrential rain, the Samoans kicked the only two goals of the first half and then completely dominated the second to run out 7-1 victors.

And there was more pain for Aussies a short time later when they fell 6-2 to Nauru. Nauru led 3-0 early before the Aussies fought back to 3-2 at halftime. The second half belonged to Nauru, as they kicked a further three goals to register a comfortable vixctory.

Meanwhile, the United Nations men’s side opened their campaign with a big 11-1 victory over Nauru.

PREVIEW

It’s the Aussie rules format quickly sweeping the nation, and KommunityTV will be your only place to watch the best at the craft go to work.

Australian Football International will host the fourth edition of its World 9s tournament, a modified version of Australian rules which uses a rectangular rugby field, on Saturday.

KommunityTV has partnered with AFI to exclusively LIVE STREAM all of the action from FIELD ONE at the tournament, including all grand finals.

The brainchild of AFI chief executive Brian Clarke, the modified sport is believed to be the perfect gateway to introduce Aussie rules to the world.

“Ninety-nine per cent of the world‘s sporting fields are rectangular, so we wanted to showcase that it was possible to be played on rectangular fields,” Clarke said.

“We unashamedly are trying to follow the same path as Rugby 7s, we want to take Footy 9s to the Olympics and we believe we can.”

The World 9s will be played as a single-day carnival, with a full round robin before a grand final in each division.

The carnival includes two men’s divisions and a women’s division, with teams representing a number of nations from around the world.

While Australia will be an early favourite in the mens and women's divisions, they will come up against cultural sides such as Italy, New Zealand, Samoa, USA, South Sudan and a combined United Nations team.

“There’s 200 countries in the world and we have 14 teams, 13 of them are representing Melbourne’s multicultural communities,” Clarke said.

“But what’s really exciting for us is that we have a team of women in the States that are coming all the way to play in this event. They have paid their own way to get here, they’re the US Amazons.

“These girls have fallen in love with the game in the States and they’re starting to see that 9s is the way to go. That’s why we have created this World 9s, to showcase the fact that our game can truly become international.”

The LIVE STREAM will be available through all of News Corp Australia’s mastheads.

WHAT IS FOOTY 9s?

Footy 9s adopts most of the traditional rules from it’s parent sport, Australian rules football, with a few key differences.

Footy 9s is played on a rugby field, using rugby posts. There are no behind posts.

If a ball hits the upright and goes through the goal, it is counted as a goal, but if it hits the post and rebounds into the field of play, it’s play on.

Players are also banned from kicking the ball off the ground, it must be drop punted from the hands.

Clarke explained it proved a pretty crucial rule.

“We found in the soccer playing nations, if you didn’t have that rule, they wouldn’t pick it up,” Clarke said.

“We reckon we have developed a version of the game that’s a fair dinkum version – like rugby 7s have developed a fair dinkum version of rugby 15. It’s not AFLX.”
