St Pats, who have won six Shields since 2010, needed a strong last quarter effort to see off the challenge of Emmanuel College.
The match is set to be a thriller next Wednesday, August 3, especially with Whitefriars coming off an ACC premiership success this season.
Emmanuel College were in the game heading into the last quarter and trailed by only one goal.
But St Pats took the game away from them in the last quarter and eventually won 10.7 (67) to 5.6 (36).
It means St Pats will go into their 12th consecutive grand final.

PREVIEW: Top talent on show in Herald Sun Shield
Some of the best school footballing talent across the state are set to go head-to-head in the Herald Sun Shield semi-finals today, streamed on KommunityTV.
Last week, the girls set the competition alight in nailbiting finishes. They play their grand finals tomorrow.
The boys will begin their finals series this week with St Patrick’s College Ballarat taking on Emmanuel College and Whitefriars playing Christian College Geelong.
The matches are set to bring a combination of NAB League, local seniors and underage representatives into the one team to play for their school.
Whitefriars senior coach and head of football Kristan Height said it was nice to progress to the Herald Sun Shield finals after missing out in 2019 when they lost to St Bernard‘s by a point in the ACC Grand Final.
“The Whitefriars senior football side in 2019, we lost by a point, in 2020 there was no season and in 2021 the season got cut short again on us and we missed out on that opportunity,” Height said.
“And then in 2022, the good news story is that we have had a full season.
“We have been able to compete and play football, and get the boys back playing their favourite sport again as a team and really enjoying themselves wearing the Whitefriars jumper.
“And having some success with doing that, winning the ACC Grand Final and hopefully now competing and playing off in the Herald Sun Shield final.”
Height said he was excited that his school was recognised in the shield competition again this year.
The school has produced AFL players in the past including Christian Petracca and Sam Weideman who played in a losing Grand-Final against St Patrick’s College in 2014 at the MCG.
Whitefriars has also had Patrick Lipinski and Marc Murphy play at the school, while AFL clubs have recently drafted James Blanck, Jackson Archer and Dylan Williams from the program.
The school has also produced many players to local clubs and VFL teams.
Height said the players were excited to gear up for the finals in attempt of creating some history for the school.
