PREVIEW

It’s shaping as an exciting weekend for the Northern Knights and Oakleigh Chargers.

For the boys teams of both sides, it’s the final opportunity for several 19-year-old prospects to strut their stuff ahead of next week’s AFL Mid-Season Draft.

Their final audition will be live streamed on KommunityTV from 11am on Saturday before the girls clash at Preston City Oval from 1.30pm.

Among those who will be looking to produce a big performance is Chargers tall Will Elliot, one of 11 players to have undergone medical testing from the AFL in the lead up to the May 31 draft.

Elliot’s 2022 season was hampered by knee concerns which saw him play just eight games.

But there has been interest from AFL clubs after positive signs to start the Coates Talent League season.

“He’ll play predominantly forward and about 20 per cent in the ruck this weekend,” Chargers talent manager Alex Davey said.

“Will was looking at being around the top-20 in the draft last year before he had his issues with injuries, but he’s responded really well since coming back into the program.”

The Chargers are also set to be boosted by the return of 189cm prospect Luke Teal.

He has recently been playing with Richmond’s VFL side and has averaged just under 14 disposals in the state league.

“He’s a second or third tall defender and it’s a role he does really well,” Davey said.

“We’ve been happy with the way he’s been playing. We’re looking forward to having him back, especially at a time where we’ve lost a few kids to school footy.”

Knights talent manager Nat Grindal revealed Flynn Riley wouldn’t play this weekend due to illness and was expecting “substantial” changes to the side due to school footy commitments.

“Those changes mean some great opportunities perhaps for a few younger guys, I’d expect we’d have a few debutants this weekend,” she said.

“It’s our first home game so we’re excited to get out there for that. Oakleigh are always fierce competitors so it should be a really good day of footy.”

An exciting clash awaits in the girls game with Oakleigh set to put its undefeated record on the line upon return from a community break.

The Chargers sit unbeaten on top of the ladder while the Knights are fourth with a 3-1 record.

Lara Hausegger looms as a key player for Oakleigh after producing a strong start to the season averaging just under 21 disposals.

“She’s put in a good body of work,” Davey said.

“Her pre-season was exceptional and she has built off the back of that. We’ve got an exceptional coaching group led by Ty Vickery, who are really motivated to keep driving this group forward.

“We’ve got a lot of bottom age talent who continue to develop extremely well.”

Knights young gun Holly Ridewood has impressed in her first weeks in the program with four strong performances to start the season.

Playing on a wing, she has demonstrated a fantastic understanding of the game.

“She’s playing what I think is the hardest position on the ground,” Grindal said.

“But her willingness to play to structure and learn has been super. Her weapon is her marking, she’s really athletic and is always marking the ball at its highest point.”
