The victory moved the Rebels above the Knights on the ladder by percentage.

PREVIEW

The Greater Western Victoria Rebels midfield is thriving in 2023 - and they’re doing it without a dominant ruckman.

David Loader’s side hasn’t won the hit-out stat since their round eight win against Tasmania, but a core group of stars are showing a fantastic ability to read the opposition’s big man.

Their next test will come against the Northern Knights on Saturday afternoon.

You can catch all the action LIVE and EXCLUSIVE on KommunityTV from 12.30pm at Preston City Oval.

Headlined by the impressive George Stevens, who is averaging 29.4 disposals a game, the Rebels midfield will be tasked with leading their side to a valuable four points.

Lachie Charleson, Alex Molan, Luamon Lual and Khy Jess are others to have impressed in the middle of the ground in recent weeks.

George Stevens has had an outstanding season.

“We were beaten 17-46 in hit-outs against the Falcons last week, but we still managed to win the clearances,” Loader said.

“The boys are working really hard once the ball comes to ground. We’ve had a number of guys play in the ruck, it’s a tough position to play, but they’re going in and competing.

“Our midfield has been super impressive, they’ve just stood up to the challenge.”

The Rebels enter the weekend in fifth place, only outside the top-four on percentages and a precious double chance.

The Knights are currently third on the ladder.

“We’re really looking forward to this challenge,” Loader said.

“One of the most challenging things for us is selection. For the game against the Falcons, we made seven changes despite having a big win against the Bushrangers.

“Sam Lalor and Flynn Penry should come back in the next couple of weeks as well. Sam is a state player and Flynn is a 200cm prospect who can probably help us go to another level.

“Like every year, I’ve enjoyed seeing how much this group has developed in a short space of time.

“We’ve got such an engaged group who are so involved in what we’re trying to do as a club.”
