STAWELL GIFT: CLIMBING JACOB’S LADDER

Despite its popularity, athletics has never been able to get a regular gig on TV.

The short-lived Nitro series in 2017 was the last time there was live televised action.

The four main meetings in Canberra, Sydney, Perth and Brisbane — which go from late January to mid-March — will be cornerstones of the coverage.

Some secondary events, including this week’s Australian All-Schools in Cairns and the time-honoured Zatopek: 10 at Lakeside Stadium on December 13, will also appear on Kayo.

Athletics Australia chief executive Darren Gocher said the partnership would allow the public to get to know the next batch of Olympic stars.

“This new partnership will help deliver unprecedented coverage of athletics to more Australians across the summer,” Gocher said.

“We have a big few months of competition ahead, particularly with the launch of our new Summer Super Series.

“The coverage will provide a platform to promote awareness and accessibility of our foundational sport, as well as highlight the immense talent of our nations athletes.”

Commonwealth high-jump champion Brandon Starc said the live streaming was a major breakthrough for athletes.

“It’s great to finally get this recognition for our sport,” Starc said. “It will be a great thing for athletics to be streamed into Australian households.”

Kayo Sports features more than 50 sports, and viewers can mix and match live events and replays on a single screen.
