Some of them are unrecognisable to most of AFL fans, yet every one of them has been significant in 2019.
They are the players who get the job done without fanfare, and not the names you are going to find in most All-Australian teams at the halfway mark of the season.

Someone like Port Adelaide key defender Dougal Howard, a 199cm tough nut who grew up in Wayne Carey’s hometown of Wagga Wagga.

Or Darcy MacPherson, the small forward son of former Footscray player Steve MacPherson who was overlooked by the Western Bulldogs as a father-son recruit in 2015.
Then there is the ever-developing Irishman Mark O’Connor at Geelong, or Jack Macrae of the Dogs who just keeps chugging along without the attention afforded his more spectacular teammate in Marcus Bontempelli.

Rising 31, Travis Boak is enjoying his best season in five years, while Carlton’s Harry McKay is up there with the best in 2019 when it comes to contested marks.
Jeremy Finlayson, a key forward component from Culcairn for GWS, is arguably as improved as any player in the game after starting 2018 brilliantly as a defender before being dropped in the finals last year.
In the ruck the obvious standout is Brodie Grundy with Max Gawn running second, but Gold Coast fans are ore than happy with what they get from Jarrod Witts each week.
