Jon Anderson: Punter’s shrewd $20K Stawell Gift sting; 3AW radio team switched off by Doggies

Jon Anderson reveals why the Bulldogs told one radio team to keep it down and explains how one journo pulled off a Stawell Gift sting.

I wasn’t aware there was a volume level on talking in one AFL room, but that was the case for the Western Bulldogs last weekend after they lost to Richmond at the MCG.

The 3AW team arrived in the Dogs’ rooms after the game hopeful of a player interview.

After that request was denied they were then told they were talking too loudly and would have to leave the rooms if they wanted to continue speaking.

PUNTER POCKETED $20K IN ONE OF STAWELL GIFT’S BIGGEST STINGS

Thirty-two years ago Nic Bideau was a fresh-faced journo for The Sun News Pictorial, far removed from the lofty role he plays in world athletics today.

Recently employed as athletics writer for The Sun, Bideau had been sent to the Stawell Easter Gift with $500 expenses and an order from his sports editor to “find some of those great betting stories that always happen at Stawell”.

Bideau, blessed with a healthy degree of street smarts, determined the best way to find a betting story was to create one of his own, so he approached a bookmaker with his expenses.

“I’d seen this kid called Dean Capobianco the previous November in Perth where he was really impressive in the 200m,” Bideau said.

“The next time I saw him was just before Stawell at the national championships where he was just beaten by a very good runner named Rob Stone. So I rang Rob Stone and said, ‘How would you go at Stawell off 2.25m?’ He said he thought he would win so I decided to back ‘Capo’.

“I went up to a bookie named Ivor White at the Call of the Card and asked what price he would give me. When he said 66-1 I nearly fell over, before asking could I have $500 on him to win $33,000?

“The bookie said he would take $100 each way (profit of just under $8000).

“He won his heat but wasn’t one of the fastest, so I backed him again at 25-1, with the favourites Tim ‘Emu’ Mason and Todd Ireland. For the final there was a headwind which suited ‘Capo’ and he got up to beat “The Emu” and Ireland.

“I went straight to the bookie who could only pay me the original bet and he put the rest on an IOU (which he honoured a couple of weeks later).”

The overall collect was roughly $20,000.

“Then I rang the sports editor and told him the bookies couldn’t pay so I got the money and my first ever front page story the next day,” Bideau said.

Three years later Capobianco ran fifth in the 200m at the World Championships, while Bideau has gone on to manage and coach some of Australia’s finest athletes.

Diego shirt drama all part of the theatre

LOVE the story surrounding the authenticity of Diego Maradona’s alleged 1986 second half Argentinian shirt that is being sold by former English player Steve Hodge through Sotheby’s.

We are talking about something valued around $5 million, so when Maradona’s eldest daughter Dalma said it’s not the actual shirt, things get serious.

“That shirt is the one he wore in the first half, not the one in which he scored two goals in the second half (beating England 2-1 in a quarter-final). He told me, ‘Why am I going to give (Hodge) the shirt of my life?’,” Dalma said.

Sotherby’s have hit back, claiming “extensive diligence and scientific research” proves it’s the second-half shirt.
