How long does Chris Stapleton’s USA national anthem go, some Rihanna Halftime show props and which Gatorade colour wins? The best Super Bowl LVII novelty bets

From the length of the national anthem and the Gatorade colour tipped over the winning coach to Rihanna’s outfit: the Super Bowl has novelty bets for everyone.

There’s nothing quite like a Super Bowl.

The pomp, the circumstance, the sheer American-ness of it all is perfectly over-the-top and a fittingly massive celebration of sport.

But also, it means plenty of weird and wonderful aspects NOT to do with the game that have their own betting markets.

What song does Rihanna sing first at halftime? What colour will the Gatorade be that’s tipped on the winning coach? How long does the US national anthem go for?

It’s an extra additional level of Super Bowl enjoyment: so what are the odds and best picks for the Super Bowl novelty markets?

LENGTH OF U.S.A. NATIONAL ANTHEM

  • Over/Under 127.5 seconds

The Super Bowl really starts when everyone has their phones out using a stopwatch app to time just how long it takes to sing the ‘Star Spangled Banner’.

This year sees country music star Chris Stapleton letting loose on ol’ faithful, which makes this a tricky proposition: there’s exactly zero footage dug up of the eight-time Grammy winner singing the anthem.

So, it’s best to look at trends.

In eight of the last 10 Super Bowls, the anthem singer has gotten to at least the two-minute mark and interestingly, three of the past four country singers – including Mickey Guyton last year, who clocked in at 1:52 – meandered their way past the betting line ‘over’.

Stapleton isn’t one to rush and could whip out a gnarly guitar solo that goes for 45 seconds, but only three performances have gone past his current 2 minute 7 second line since 2010: the Eric Church/Jazmine Sullivan duet (2021), Lady Gaga (2016) and Alicia Keys (2013).

He’ll run close, but ultimately under.

THE PICK: Under 127.5 seconds - $2.25

HALFTIME SHOW: COLOUR OF RIHANNA’S FIRST OUTFIT

The show that stops the world, in the middle of the game that stops the world.

This year’s Super Bowl halftime show is headlined by Rihanna and we can expect her Super Bowl halftime show to be a huge, ostentatious and fun affair – plus the singer has an entire line of Savage X Fenty gear based on the Super Bowl – but what colour will her first outfit be?

‘Black’ is the current favourite, but there might be a hitch where Rihanna comes out in am eye-popping bright number – like silver/platinum or the yellow/gold in her teaser video – before paring back.

THE PICK: Silver/Grey - $4.33

HALFTIME SHOW: RIHANNA - FIRST SONG PERFORMED

We’re expecting fireworks from Rihanna’s halftime show, but what song does the Barbadian superstar kick off her 12-15 minute set with?

Could it be the ubiquitous ‘Diamonds’? Will she make a statement and remind everyone who she is with ‘Say My Name’? Or does ‘Stay’ take the proverbial cake?

Considering it’s shortened considerably into favouritism after the NFL and Apple Music used it to promote the halftime show - with fans from all 32 teams singing it - that might be the hint we need.

THE PICK: ‘Stay’ - $2.20

HALFTIME SHOW: TO BE A SPECIAL GUEST PERFORMER

Who will end up out there sharing the stage with Ri-Ri?

A frequent collaborator on her biggest hits, there’s plenty of options with Jay Z ($1.44), Calvin Harris ($1.57), Drake ($2), her partner A$AP Rocky ($2.25), Eminem ($2.5) and DJ Khaled at the top of the list ($3).

After a bit of time off to have her and Rocky’s son, Rihanna could use this as a chance to establish herself and limit the guests, but with Jay Z’s Roc Nation producing the show and Jay, Rocky and Drake all featuring on Rih’s mega-hit ‘Umbrella’ there’s a good chance it’s in the halftime show setlist and we see them all onstage.

THE PICK: Drake - $2

WHAT WILL THE SUPER BOWL MVP MENTION FIRST IN THEIR SPEECH

This is a fascinating market, but also it feels straightforward. The past three Super Bowl MVPs have thanked their teammates right off the bat.

If the Eagles win and Hurts takes out MVP, any other player/teammates ($1.91) is the play.

But if it’s Patrick Mahomes as the Chiefs get over the line, God/Faith/Religion is the leading candidate ($2.75). The ‘any member of the coaching staff’ is a nice longshot at $7.50 as well.

THE PICK: Any other player/teammates - $1.91

WHAT COLOUR LIQUID WILL BE POURED ON THE WINNING COACH

The Gatorade bath for the Super Bowl’s winning coach is one of American sport’s most hallowed traditions. Blue has been the winner the past two years, but what colour are we looking for in Super Bowl LVII?

Well, a lot of this one also comes down to who you think will win the game.

If it’s Philly, the green/yellow combo ($3.50) is a great play, given that’s what the Eagles dumped on Nick Sirianni in their NFC title win this year.

Same goes for Kansas City: in their AFC Championship win it was an orange ($4) bath for coach Andy Reid. Plus that was the colour the Chiefs had when they won Super Bowl LIV in 2020: would they dare go against tradition? Not likely.

THE PICK: Green/Yellow - $3.50
