Yulong filly Treasurethe Moment out to give her sire a boost with VRC Oaks success

Victory for Treasurethe Moment in the Group 1 VRC Oaks will not only enhance her breeding value but also boost her sire’s stallion credentials.

Melbourne Cup review

Yulong can secure a lucrative double return if Treasurethe Moment wins Thursday’s $1m VRC Oaks, with general manager Vin Cox confident the talented home-bred filly is primed for her spring grand final.

Victory in the 2500m race would add considerable value to Treasurethe Moment’s breeding future - not to mention the $600,000 prizemoney for first place.

Whatever the filly does on the racetrack afterwards - if that happens - would shadow her value to Yulong’s breeding portfolio, as she would be added to the stud’s extraordinary broodmare band that includes more than 60 Group 1 winners or producers.

Better still, she would give Yulong’s rising young stallion Alabama Express his first Group 1 success as a sire, which would further boost his future at stud.

“It’s great to have another stallion going well, who is a lot younger (than the stud’s superstar Written Tycoon),” Cox said this week.

“The future looks bright (for Alabama Express).”

Cox said Treasurethe Moment had pulled up well after her strong win in last Saturday’s Wakeful Stakes (2000m), defeating another Oaks contender Powers Of Opal.

“She has come out of the race exceptionally well,” Cox said of Treasurethe Moment.

“She ate up after the race so we are looking forward to Thursday.”

Treasurethe Moment has won her last three starts for trainer Matt Laurie and looked to be strong at the line over 2000m.

She is a $3.10 Oaks favourite with Ladbrokes, while Powers Of Opal has eased to $4.

The step up to 2500m is unknown for Treasurethe Moment.

But Yulong is hoping a staying connection deeper in the filly’s pedigree page could be the key to her getting the extra 500m.

Four generations back into Treasurethe Moment’s pedigree is a mare called Market Slide, who was the dam of 2002 Melbourne Cup winner Media Puzzle.

Laurie believes the staying line deep in the filly’s page will stand her in good stead on Thursday.

“She’s out of a Street Cry mare and there’s a bit of a staying bloodline further down the page,” Laurie said.

“At the end of the day, you’ve got to pick an individual and if you are trying to purchase a stayer, this horse paraded as a yearling, and she screams that.”

Treasurethe Moment is the third and last foal of Street Cry mare Draconic Treasure, who was purchased at Keeneland for almost $500,000 in 2016.

Draconic Treasure passed away two years ago, while in foal to Written Tycoon.
