The Te Akau Racing camp is flying but is surprised by the market support for a two-year-old on debut at Caulfield on Wednesday.

Ladbrokes punters have backed the Mark Walker-trained Veomas from $4.40 to $3.90 in early betting in the Listed Debutant Stakes, a race in which none of the runners have races.

Te Akau has won with five of its last seven runners in Victoria but Melbourne representative Ben Gleeson wondered whether Veomas would be one to maintain the stable’s golden run on Wednesday.

He said Veomas would face some tough competition from some of Melbourne’s noted two-year-old stables in his $175,000 assignment.

“Off the jumpout videos that I have watched, a lot of them look very forward,” Gleeson said.

“He was off, out the back, and ridden but I know he showed a bit of class down the outside, there are probably going to be a few more two-year-olds from the Price/Kent and Freedman stables that are going to be a little more forward in their career.”

Gleeson said the team simply wanted Veomas to start his career with a positive experience as the son of I Am Invincible would develop further in the coming months.

“He is a horse of the future,” Gleeson said.

“He’s an I Am Invincible and most of those are three-year-olds and he’s a half-brother to Seabrook, who was an autumn two-year-old Group 1 winner.

“Whatever he does now, he’s there for experience and it will hopefully benefit him for the autumn with bigger things in mind.

“He’s going to be a beautiful horse in 12 months.”

Jockey Michael Dee will ride Veomas in the Debutant Stakes.
