Racenet’s Clinton Payne presents his tips and form assessment for each of the runners in Saturday’s Group 1 Caulfield Guineas at Caulfield.

Punters + Racing Victoria – This is how we Spring series (Episode 5)

The $3 million Caulfield Guineas has drawn together a high-class field of three-year-olds, with star colt Broadsiding set to start a short-priced favourite.

There was a field of 11 runners declared for the 1600m contest. Here is a runner-by-runner analysis of every horse set to line up on Saturday.

1 – BROADSIDING

Superstar colt that’s won three Group 1 races in his past four starts. The only unknown here is his ability racing in an anticlockwise direction. When it comes to assessing the form of every runner, he’s a clear top pick.

VERDICT: The horse to beat.

2 – RUE DE ROYALE

Taken to the provincials two starts back to register his first win, which he did in emphatic style. Returned to the city last time and had his chance when a respectable third in the Stutt Stakes. The mile looks right at his limit.

VERDICT: One for First 4 players.

3 – EVAPORATE

Shooting for five in a row and his past two wins have come over this trip at The Valley, the latest a dominant win in the Stutt Stakes. Drawn out, but inside Broadsiding and likely to be ahead of his rival in the run.

VERDICT: The main danger to the favourite.

4 – ANGEL CAPITAL

Chasing three wins in a row but prior to resuming this prep he got a taste of Broadsiding in the JJ Atkins in Brisbane and was beaten 6-1/4 lengths. Does appear to have improved since returning to his home state and proven at the track.

VERDICT: Place claims are strongest.

5 – MAYFAIR

Comes out of the Golden Rose where he finished third behind Broadsiding, beaten a neck. He had a race fitness advantage over Broadsiding that day and this time he also must overcome a wide draw. Is he a query at the mile?

VERDICT: He’s a trier but hard to see him turning the tables on Broadsiding.

6 – WANARUAH

After winning two on the bounce, he stepped up into Stakes grade and was safely held by Sydney’s gun filly Autumn Glow then he went to Melbourne and the 1400m stretched him in the Guineas Prelude. Drawn to get a soft run.

VERDICT: Fifth run in first prep and a query at the mile. Doubt it.

7 – PUBLIC ATTENTION

Lightly-raced galloper that comes here after chasing home Angel Capital in his past two starts over 1200 and 1400m respectively. Meets that horse worse at the weights this time but had a torrid run last start.

VERDICT: Should run the trip and open to further improvement.

8 – FEROCE

He never saw daylight down the running in the McNeil but there were a few better in the run to the line last time in the Prelude. Draw to get a favourable run open to further fitness improvement due to his lack of effort in the McNeil.

VERDICT: Think he’ll find this too rich.

9 – TROPICUS

He returns home after catching the eye with strong closing sectionals in the San Domenico and the Run To The Rose. Disappointed last time out in the Golden Rose when fair late. Rails draw a plus?

VERDICT: Place claims are strongest.

10 – VIANARRA

Arrives here off three runs this prep, yet to win at the provincials and two midweeks at Sandown. He had every chance last time over 1400m and when racing in black-type grade as a two-year-old, he came up short.

VERDICT: Not good enough.

11 – PRIVATE LIFE

Ventured south after a solid effort at the midweeks in Sydney where he defeated two subsequent Melbourne Stakes performing fillies Lilac and Declichy Boulevard. He then closed off for fourth in the Caulfield Guineas Prelude.

VERDICT: Another for the First4 players.
