WYONG INSIDE MAIL
RACE 1: BENCHMARK 64 (2000m)
COTO DE CAZO (3) broke his maiden in a 2100m C1 & Maiden Plate here at Wyong earlier on. The John Sargent trained son of Contributer won his 14th and last start in a 2000m C1 & Maiden at Kembla, easily, with subsequent (easy) Canterbury Wednesday winner, Tatsula chasing. CORMAC T (1) is a lightly-raced and reliable middle distance type who is ‘in’ well after the 3kg claim for Mollie Fitzgerald. SUBUKI (7) is fit and was good at Eagle Farm on Cup day.
BET: Coto De Caza to win, quinella 1,3
RACE 2: CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1600m)
BARAZIN (1) is an Irish-bred gelding with Kris Lees. He was ‘123’ in his three runs in France and has been quite good to varying degrees in his subsequent five runs down here for Australian Bloodstock. He is first-up today at a mile but keep in mind, he won on debut in France over 1800m. PASIMA (2) goes well enough at the trip and is back to provincial grade after three midweek runs. JACK OF ACES (3) and WATERVILLE (4) have claims.
BET: Barazin to win.
RACE 3: MAIDEN HANDICAP (1600m)
STARPHISTOCATED (6) is a half to Youngstar and Funstar. The Anthony Cummings trained filly has had the absolute perfect build-up to the 1600m today having debuted over 1200m followed by a good, solid on-pace third over 1040m at Hawkesbury. Viewers might be having flashbacks to the 1977 English Derby winner The Minstrel when they set eyes on this first starter BLACK BABYLON (2). Compare the pair! He can win this too!
BET: Starsophisticated to win, quinella 2,6.
RACE 4: BENCHMARK 68 (1600m)
GUZUMPED (2) clocked in fifth at Rosehill first-up but he deadset a neck off being awarded third place. One more stride and he takes bronze. Whatever the case, it was a fabulous return from the Brad Widdup trained son of Dundeel who, we must say, is 2 from 3 at Wyong and 1 from 1 at the t/d. Guzumped is one of three Dundeel offspring in the race. His biggest obstacle could well be DREAMDEEL (1) who is trained at Wyong and is 2 starts, 1 win and 1 second at the trip.
BET: Guzumped to win, quinella 1,2.
RACE 5: BENCHMARK 64 (1000m)
ZEALOUSLY (2) was a popular winner at Kembla on Cup day; basically, he was a moral off those trials not to mention his form. You would have to go back a long way to find a more impressive Maiden winner; he ran 56.47s for the 1000m, home in 32.75s with four lengths to spare – easing down. Eager to see how he backs it up in this rather competitive Benchmark 64 up against the likes of the speedy COOL SHALAA (1) and the in-form ZOE SHARK (3). Can just see WELCOME GYPSY (6) flying home late.
BET: Zealously (best bet).
RACE 6: MAIDEN PLATE (1000m)
MAJESTUOSO PHOENIX (1) wouldn’t look out of place striding around the birdcage at Longchamp or Chantilly. This son of French Derby winner Lope De Vega was sold for $200,000 at the Magic Millions to Maher/Australian Bloodstock and while you get the sense, he will be a 1400m/miler, he has class. That’s in contrast to MISS TRENTINO (9) who is fast and seemingly wound-up like a spring for her debut at the perfect venue. Drawn out but she looks to have plenty of tow.
BET: Majestuoso Phoenix each-way, quinella 1,9.
RACE 7: MIDWAY MAIDEN PLATE (1200m)
Kim Waugh is currently on 111 winners here at the home track. She can add to the tally today with a very promising first starter named BONDASONG (3), albeit in spite of a visitor’s draw. Pedigree buffs will be keen to learn that fourth dam is the NZ broodmare gem, Hunza (dam of Courtza etc.) OVERLAND (6) is another first starter who has trialled exceedingly well and looks to have a bright future and Bullock rides. SUNCONE (9) can make this a ‘debutantes trifecta’.
BET: Bondasong to win, box trifecta 1,3,6,9.
RACE 8: CLASS 1 HANDICAP (1200m)
CANDLEWICK (7) is a fascinating horse. Just on pedigree alone. She is a Pierro half-sister to Everest winner, Classique Legend. Her dam is a half sister to Racing To Win so who better than John O’Shea to co-trained Candlewick. As for form, Candlewick more than justified her $1.85 SP when she won a Super Maiden here over 1200m on Five Diamonds by two and a bit lengths. Hard to tip against no doubt, but this is a pretty darn deep Class 1 (if they all run). A horse like PLAZA (9) has run some good races in good contests. So too THUNDERING SOUL (4) and WILD GYPSY (1).
BET: Candlewick to win, quinella 7,9
