As many as 90,000 people are expected to flock to Flemington Racecourse for the 2022 Melbourne Cup, but one key figure won’t be in attendance.
It’s understood Victorian Premier Dan Andrews will be watching the race that stops the nation in Shepparton, one of the northern Victorian towns to have been severely impacted by October’s flooding, alongside emergency services workers.
It’s not yet known where the state’s opposition leader, Mathew Guy, will be watching the election, but the Victorian Liberal Party has been contacted by NCA NewsWire.
On Tuesday, the writs were issued for the Victorian election, dissolving both houses of state parliament before the November 26 election.
The Premier’s decision comes as Flemington welcomes back its first significant crowd in three years after Covid-19 prevented large attendances in 2020 and 2021.
The crowd was capped at 10,000 people for last year’s Melbourne Cup.
Punters can expect a bleak day for this year’s race, with wind, rain and a maximum temperature of just 14 degrees predicted.
The $8 million race was reduced to a field of 22 on Tuesday morning, after Luna Flare was scratched following an inspection by Racing Victoria vets.
