A lack of size might not be a barrier to Mostly Cloudy landing in the Melbourne Cup via Saturday’s $500,000 Andrew Ramsden at Flemington.
The winner of the Andrew Ramsden is guaranteed a Melbourne Cup start, but surprisingly the race only drew 17 entries.
Trainers Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young decided to give Mostly Cloudy his chance at the Andrew Ramsden after three solid runs this time in.
Mostly Cloudy will drop in class after a solid sixth in the Group 1 Sydney Cup at Randwick on April 13.
Busuttin said what Mostly Cloudy lacked in size, he made up in honesty.
“He’s not very big but he tries very hard every time he goes to the races so he deserves to go into a race like the Ramsden,” Busuttin said.
“He was good first-up then ran on well in the other Melbourne Cup qualifying race (the Roy Higgins) but his Sydney Cup run was excellent.
“With a bit more luck from the barrier, he might have even run a place.”
Busuttin said connections were realistic about Mostly Cloudy’s chances of winning a Melbourne Cup, but it was worth chasing the rich Andrew Ramsden purse.
“We’re not looking that far forward to the Melbourne Cup but the Ramsden is a $500,000 race so it’s great prizemoney for the owners if he can be competitive as we think he will,” Busuttin said.
“If he happened to win the race, he’d probably be chasing the lower share of the prizemoney in the Melbourne Cup but it would be a terrific experience for the owners.”
TAB rated Mostly Cloudy as an $11 chance to win the Andrew Ramsden.
Adelaide galloper The Map is the early $3 favourite in TAB’s ‘all-in’ market ahead of Adelaide River, Acceleration and Samuel Langhorne at $6.
